London travel news LIVE: Stansted services, Central and Piccadilly lines majorly disrupted as Overground strikes called off

Several train operators which take travellers to and from Stansted Airport have been delayed by up to an hour in what National Rail has called "major disruption".

A fault with the signalling system has affected CrossCountry, Greater Anglia and Stansted Express services and disruption was earlier expected until 8pm.

In an update late on Thursday, National Rail said: “Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.”

Meanwhile, the Piccadilly Line is experiencing severe delays and London Overground strikes planned for next week have been called off.

Disruption to Thameslink trains via Catford

Earlier this morning, all Thameslink lines between Shortlands and Denmark Hill via Catford were blocked, with trains diverted vie Herne Hill.

The following stations were not able to be served:

  • Ravensbourne

  • Beckenham Hill

  • Bellingham

  • Catford

  • Crofton Park

  • Nunhead

  • Peckham Rye

  • Denmark Hill

The issue was also affecting some journies to London Victoria, Sevenoaks, Orpington, Welwyn Garden City and Luton.

While the points failure which caused this disruption has now been cleared, they may still be some fallout while Thameslink tries to get its service back to normal.

London Overground to be rebranded with different sections given their own name and colour

The London Overground is to be renamed and rebranded in a bid to make it easier for passengers to work out where their train goes.

The six different branches of the 113-station network will each be given a different name and colour – ending the format of all Overground routes being shown as orange-bordered lines on the Tube map.

The Euston to Watford Junction part of the Overground, which calls at Wembley Central station, will be renamed the “Lioness line” in honour of the England women’s football team that won the Euros at Wembley stadium in 2022.

Other parts of the line will be renamed the Suffragette line, the Windrush line, the Weaver line, the Mildmay line and the Liberty line.

A broken down truck on the M25 has caused congestion between J27 (M11 J6/Epping) and J26 (Waltham Abbey/Loughton) has left one lane closed.

Disruption is expected between 10.15 and 10.30am.

We told you earlier about a fault with the signalling system between Stratford and Shenfield have leaving some lines blocked.

Trains running between these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 20 minutes or revised.

The disruption was expected until 10am but National Rail has now extended this by an hour.

However, the previous severe delays to Elizabeth Line (between Shenfield and Whitechapel) have become minor.

Some lines on the Southeastern network are closed tonight, as they have been since Monday, because of engineering work.

Tonight will see Network Rail carrying out essential maintenance on the lines to/from London Cannon Street so there will be no trains at London Cannon Street from approximately 11.35pm until the end of service.

Trains will run to / from London Charing Cross instead, if you could please make your way to London Bridge for these trains.

Engineering work is taking place between London Fenchurch Street and Barking, closing various lines.

From 11:30pm each night until the end of service, trains that usually run to / from London Fenchurch Street will be amended to run to / from London Liverpool Street. London Liverpool Street is only a short distance away from London Fenchurch Street.

Shuttle train services will run between Upminster and Grays via Ockenden, and between Upminster and Pitsea via Laindon.

Planned RMT strike on Overground called off

Planned strikes next week by London Overground workers have been called off after a pay offer was improved, the RMT union announced.

Members of the RMT employed by Arriva Rail London on the Overground had been due to walk out for 48 hours on February 19 and again on March 4 in a dispute over pay.

But the union said that “progress” had been made on the pay offer previously tabled by Arriva.

Stansted Airport train disruption now expected until end of day

Major disruption to trains running to and from Stansted Airport is now expected to last under the end of the day, says National Rail.

It was earlier hoped the disruption would end around 8pm.

A fault with the signalling system has affected CrossCountry, Greater Anglia and Stansted Express services.

A severely reduced train service is running to and from Stansted, with trains subject to delays and cancellations.
