Double-Oscar nominee Blethyn has been leading Vera for more than a decade. She stars as the retired detective based on the Ann Cleeves novels. Vera plods along in a dishevelled state but has a calculating mind and despite her irascible personality, she cares deeply about her work and colleagues. The show airs on BritBox in the U.S.
Vera has been on TV for more than 50 episodes and tends to air its seasons in short runs that are watched by millions per episode.
Blethyn, who was Oscar nominated for Mark Herman’s Little Voice and Mike Leigh’s Secrets & Lies, won the Rose d’Or Lifetime Achievement Award for her portrayal of the detective in 2021.
“Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I’m sad to be saying ‘cheerio’,” she said. “But I am so proud of our achievements over the last 14 years. I’ll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role.”
