True Detective fans have been given a first look at the reboot's fourth series Night Country in a new teaser trailer.

The HBO series starring Doctor Who's Christopher Eccleston, Hollywood icon Jodie Foster, and boxing star Kali Reis, will see crimes investigated in Alaska by Detective Liz Danvers (Foster) and partner Evangeline Navarro (Reis).

The dark, intense trailer begins with Navarro asking Danvers if she ever "gets this feeling that sometimes you wanna disappear?" with Danvers ominously responding "This is Alaska, nobody ever really leaves" before we see the vast, snowy landscape.

Their partnership is questioned in a scene with another member of law enforcement who remarks, "I don't know what the hell they're doing together – I thought they hated each other."

The trailer goes on to show the unlikely duo working through their differences to solve yet another barbaric crime, but all is not smooth sailing as Navarro confronts Danvers for withholding information.

Secrets threaten to "sink them in the ice" as the trailer's dramatic conclusion sees the detectives find what appears to be a live human trapped in ice. It ends by showing the season's release date, which will be on January 4 on HBO Max.

A synopsis for the latest instalment reads: "When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace.

"To solve the case, Detectives Foster and Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice."

It will be the first time show creator Nic Pizzolatto is not at the helm. However, former stars of the show Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are on board as executive producers alongside Foster.

Killing Eve star Fiona Shaw, Deadwood actor John Hawkes, The Nevers' Finn Bennett, and The Grizzlies star Anna Lambe also appear in the show.

True Detective: Night Country streams on HBO Max on January 14.
