New Lord of the Rings movies in the works
Several new films based on The Lord of the Rings are in the works.
With the franchise in the middle of a resurgence thanks to the hit Prime Video series The Rings Power and upcoming anime film War of the Rohirrim, Warner Bros Discovery has made a deal with rights holders Middle-earth Enterprises for more feature films.
This deal is actually separate from the TV side, which covers Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, so these new films would theoretically not directly connect to that show.
Warner Bros Pictures Group co-chairs and CEOs Michael DeLuca and Pam Abdy have released a statement expressing hopes of once again reaching the box office success of Sir Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies.
The duo said: "Twenty years ago, New Line took an unprecedented leap of faith to realise the incredible stories, characters and world of The Lord of the Rings on the big screen. The result was a landmark series of films that have been embraced by generations of fans.
"But for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by JRR Tolkien remains largely unexplored on film. The opportunity to invite fans deeper into the cinematic world of Middle-earth is an honour, and we are excited to partner with Middle-earth Enterprises and Embracer on this adventure."
A spokesperson for Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens told Variety that Warner Bros has been in touch "every step of the way", but wouldn't confirm whether they will be involved.
"We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward," Jackson, Walsh and Boyens said in a joint statement.
Upcoming animated movie The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be an original story inspired by the works of Tolkien, and directed by Ghost in the Shell veteran Kenji Kamiyama.
It will feature the voices of Succession's Brian Cox, Our Girl's Luke Pasqualino and Miranda Otto reprising her Lord of the Rings role as Rohan noblewoman Éowyn to narrate.
