Former Love Island contestant Yewande Biala has opened up on challenging misconceptions surrounding female orgasms in a new documentary.

Channel 4's Secrets of the Female Orgasms sees Yewande speak candidly about her own journey. In a recent interview, the biochemist admitted she believed orgasms were a myth as she'd never had one herself.

This admission during a radio show years ago led to her being approached for the doc, though she initially refused.

"When they asked again later, I had matured, but still had so much of my journey to do," the Islander told OK!, saying "it's an important topic that needs to be on TV".

Yewande credited her misinformation to having being brought up in a Catholic Nigerian household, where sex was never openly discussed in connection with female pleasure.

"For someone who's grown up in a conservative household and has never spoken about sex, those things were so uncomfortable," she said.

She also explained that many girls were "slut-shamed" for having sex, and told they were "dirty" if they masturbated.

"It was so bad," she recalled.

As a consequence, Yewande didn't know much about female pleasure, thinking that women speaking about it were "making this up".

"I genuinely believed for years that female orgasms were this myth," she said, adding that she was convinced "everyone's just making this up".

Once she looked into the matter, Yewande tried to have a conversation with her mum, but explained: "It was just so nerve-racking and I feel like even though we had the conversation, it wasn't the breakthrough that I needed."

Things have changed since as she's now revealed her mother is "actually looking forward to watching the show".

On her feature documentary, Yewande meets other women, scientists and sex therapists to discuss their experiences and share advice.

Secrets of the Female Orgasm will air on Channel 4. Love Island airs on ITV2 and streams on ITVX.
