Macaulay Culkin opens up about his ‘complicated relationship’ with Father’s Day

Macaulay Culkin is making Father’s Day his own with new traditions.

In a touching social media post, the actor opened up about how his “complicated” relationship with the holiday is changing now that he’s a dad. The Home Alone star shares two sons with Brenda Song.

“If you know a little about me then you’d know I’ve had a complicated relationship with Father’s Day in the past,” he wrote on Instagram. “But since becoming a papa myself I’ve decided to reinvent the wheel. Other than getting an hour or two of extra sleep I try to make the day a celebration of my boys more than me. After all, they are the ones who made me a father (no offense to Brenda). In our house Father’s Day isn’t held in as a high regard as birthdays or Christmas but it does mop the floor of such holidays as St. Patrick’s day, Valentine’s Day, and the 4th of July. I try to do fun things for the boys on Father’s Day. It’s a special day.”

The post was written alongside a photo of a box of Star Wars themed toys and snacks. Culkin added, “All of this is a way to say thank you to @lucasfilm for sending me a care package full of things that are more meant for my children to enjoy (with the exception of the hot sauce). Father’s Day isn’t for me, it’s for the people that make me feel like a father.”

In the past, Culkin has been open about his difficult relationship with his dad, Christopher Cornelius “Kit” Culkin, who managed his career as a child star. He’s said his father was “physically and mentally” abusive and resented him for his success. He also said his parents weren’t honest with him about his finances, and had them removed from his trust fund. In a 2018 interview, Culkin said he hadn’t spoken to his father in “about a quarter of a century.”

He also told New York Magazine in 2001, “I think there’s two different fathers that I have. I have my father, and I have the one in my head. The real one is gone and should be gone.”

For parents of little ones who have a complicated or nonexistent relationship with their own parents, Culkin’s post strikes a chord. But what a beautiful outlook to have now, as a father himself. Well done, Macaulay. Your kids are lucky to have you!
