Married at First Sight UK expert Paul C Brunson has defended the show's 2023 cast against claims the contestants are only on the show for exposure.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media ahead of the season premiere, Brunson and fellow expert Charlene Douglas addressed online comments about whether or not the cast were truly looking for love, or just fame.

"I've already seen some push-back online – like 'ah are they here for the fame thing'," he said.

"Everybody wants status, come on now we all want status, but they also truly want self development, each and every one of them did."

Charlene added: "All of the individuals really listened to the experts... They really listened. And really, sort of, stepped out of their comfort zone to try and do things a different way."

Premiering next week (September 18), the new season will see sixteen brand new singletons make the ultimate commitment and marry a complete stranger.

Contestants include Arthur, a tennis coach initially hesitant to join the series, and account manager Paul, who struggled to convince his parents about the idea of marrying a stranger.

Joining them are Geordie Shore: Hot Single Summer star Nathanial Valentino and clinic consultant Ella, the series' first ever trans contestant.

Charlene recently teased plenty of drama in the upcoming season, promising fans that it will be "jaw-dropping."

"I'm bursting at the seams, I would love to say so much about this season," she revealed to OK!. "The thing I can say is we don't disappoint and if I had to sum it up in two words – jaw-dropping would be the words that pop to mind."
