Malaysia will assume the role of chairman for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) next year, and the nation is eager to showcase its capabilities in its 5G private network.

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said his ministry, via Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), aims to deliver 40 5G private network use cases in the country involving various sectors like manufacturing, oil and gas, logistics, healthcare and plantation by the end of this year.

“DNB will work closely with the government, relevant ministries, and agencies, telecommunication companies and enterprises, to encourage the adoption of 5G technologies across all industries in Malaysia,” said Gobind in a statement earlier today.

“DNB is engaged with Telcos in enterprise projects in various economic sectors across multiple locations across Malaysia. There are 12 enterprise projects involving 5G trials, supporting a multitude of use cases in manufacturing, oil and gas, logistics, healthcare and plantation.

“Beyond the initial trial deployments, there is interest from enterprises in various locations in the country as these organisations embark on their digitalisation journey.

“At the moment, there are over 90 other projects and use cases at various stages of engagements and development, of which 30 are to be launched and up and running by year-end.”

He added that DNB hopes to provide 5G networks to 237 major industrial parks nationwide to significantly enhance productivity in the said areas and encourage greater investments in Malaysia.

“DNB is also working closely with the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry and the Malaysia Investment Development Authority to identify enterprises across various industrial parks and economic zones to embark on the 5G digitalisation journey.

“As of April 2024, 5G coverage has been made available across 95 industrial parks in Malaysia. This continued drive to accelerate 5G adoption amongst various enterprises is essential for Malaysia’s digital transformation and helps to position Malaysia as a 5G powerhouse during our chairmanship of Asean in 2025, and to strengthen our grip on digital-related investments and gains in the region,” he added.

Separately, Gobind said the MyGovernment website launched in 2018 would be improved, with more details of government services to ease the interaction between the people and government agencies.

He said the government welcomes input from all parties to improve the performance of its services. People are encouraged to share their opinions on how to enhance the government’s digital services via www.jdn.gov.my or www.mydigital.gov.my and submit their suggestions by July 6.
