Several Malaysian Olympians have thrown their support behind the National Press Club of Malaysia’s (NPC) inaugural ‘Jom Jalan With NPC 2024’ event at Padang Merbok, Kuala Lumpur, on June 2.

Malaysia Olympian Association (MOA) president Noraseela Khalid, who competed in the 400m hurdles at the 2012 London Olympics, said the association was excited and delighted that NPC was organising a walking event.

“I have registered for the event. Joining me in the walk are former national walker Shahrulhaizy Abdul Rahman, and double Olympian Datuk Shahrudin Mohd Ali, and his grandson (Faris Aiman Shahrizman),” said Noraseela.

Shahrudin represented Malaysia in the 100m and 200m at the 1960 Olympics in Rome and 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. Shahrudin was one of the 26 officers who formed the pioneer Air Force of Malaya in 1960. He retired as the deputy chief of the Royal Malaysian Air Force.

“Three-time Olympian Tan Sri Dr M. Jegathesan, and former Olympic walker Yuan Yufang, will also be at Padang Merbok to show their support.

“It is great that NPC is organising a walking event, as there are already many fun runs in the country... this will be different,” she added.

Open water swimmer Ridzwan Rahim, who recently completed the third leg of his ‘Terengganu Four Swims’ challenge, is also looking forward to the event as he gears up for the fourth and final leg of his challenge later this year.

There are two main categories of ‘Jom Jalan With NPC 2024’ – a competitive 10km walk and a 5km fun walk.

The competitive 10km walk will have four sub-categories – Open Men’s, Open Women’s, Boys’ and and Girls’ (aged 13-17). The fun walk, meanwhile, is open to all age groups.

The event is jointly organised by the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletics Association (FTKLAA).

The walk aims to uncover new talents and promote healthy living among the general public, particularly among younger walkers.

Exciting activities are planned, including a chance to win free Accor ALL membership passes. Participants can also enjoy yoga and Zumba classes by Nadi Tenang.

There will also be a lucky draw with exciting prizes from Mercure Kuala Lumpur Shaw Parade, Milo and Nadi Tenang.
