Fine quality Malaysian arts and crafts will be on display at the London Craft Week beginning today.

Presented by Fine Crafts Malaysia, the country’s participation in the 10th edition of the festival will focus on garments and items for the home.

Fine Crafts Malaysia’s five-day exhibition at the Austrian Embassy in London is aimed at expanding the idea of what handicraft and beauty are, and that the former must be continually modernised to remain relevant.

“In our first year (participating in the 2022 London Craft Week), we presented the Royal Pahang Weave, with the spotlight on the prison rehabilitation programme,” said Leon Chong, brand director of Pink Jambu, and part of the Royal Pahang Weave Foundation.

“In the second edition, we presented a wider range of Malaysian crafts. This year, we are a participant of Meisterstrasse, a fine craft organisation based in Vienna. We will be more sales-focused, showcasing more items that can be purchased, like garments and items for the home.

“Our pop-up will be an expansion of the boutiques in previous craft weeks,” he added.

The London Craft Week is a city-wide festival celebrating craftsmanship, across multiple sectors and disciplines, from around the world. It is taking place at over 200 locations in London – from independent shops and studios, to national museums and contemporary galleries, with digital content hosted on londoncraftweek.com.

The Malaysian entities whose products will be showcased during the exhibition include the Royal Pahang Weave by Cheminahsayang, Kebat Iban by Tun Jugah Foundation, and batik by Pink Jambu.

The Royal Pahang Weave is the brainchild of Tengku Ampuan Pahang, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah. The former Queen of Malaysia was heavily involved in the earlier two editions of the London Craft Week.

Those behind Fine Crafts Malaysia are also regular participants of the annual CIMB Artober – a three-month art, culture, and lifestyle initiative. The last edition was held in October 2023 in Kuala Lumpur.

Chong and his team are also curating a selection of crafts from Malaysia for the upcoming Homo Faber exhibition in Venice, Italy, organised by the Michelangelo Foundation.
