An elderly man was on Thursday (27 April) jailed one day and fined $600 for stealing a box of Durex vibration stimulator at the Giant supermarket at Hougang Green Shopping Mall.

Roy Cheong Weng Kay, 67, pleaded guilty in the State Courts and was sentenced on one count of theft in dwelling, with a separate theft charge taken into consideration.

Cheong, a sales manager, was caught in the act on 17 January this year. Around midnight, Giant’s loss prevention officer Tay Seng Heng observed Cheong taking the box of Durex vibration stimulator, worth $24.75, from the health and beauty section of the outlet.

Cheong had placed the box behind his iPad, which he was holding in his hands. While Tay kept a close watch, Cheong walked to the fruits and vegetables section. Tay saw Cheong looking around suspiciously but didn’t stop Cheong as he was still inside the Giant outlet.

When Cheong left the supermarket with the item in hand without paying and walked to the back alley, where a wet market was, Tay stopped him. Tay subsequently brought Cheong to the Giant supermarket office and called the police.

Upon arrival, the police arrested Cheong and seized the stolen Durex box. Cheong’s actions were also caught on CCTV cameras.

The recovered item will be returned to the Giant outlet. For theft in dwelling, Cheong could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined.
