Man admits to impregnating 2 underage girls, hitting another who was carrying his child
SINGAPORE — A 20-year-old man who impregnated three girls – two of whom were underaged – over a period of three years was convicted of multiple offences at the State Courts on Tuesday (13 July).
Two of the girls were aged 12 and 15 when they fell pregnant, with the younger girl later having an abortion while the other kept her child. While the eldest of the three girls, now aged 18, was pregnant the accused also slapped her on the cheek and kicked her lower back. She gave birth in July last year.
The man admitted to four counts of sexually penetrating a minor under the age of 16 and one count of voluntarily causing hurt to the eldest girl. Another 16 charges, mostly for sexually penetrating a minor under the age of 16, will be taken into consideration for his sentencing.
The accused, who cannot be named as he was under 18 at the time of the offences, had probation and reformative training centre reports called for him to assess his suitability for the sentencing options. He will return to court on 21 July for his sentencing.
How he met the girls
In January 2017, the man – then aged 17 – became acquainted with the 15-year-old through mutual friends. The pair then began dating.
Sometime that month they had unprotected sex at a staircase landing. The girl was a virgin prior to the encounter.
The couple had sex two or three times a month until they broke up in August 2017. The girl later discovered she was pregnant with the man’s child in early 2018. In March that year, the police received a report of the girl's underage pregnancy from the National University Hospital.
In January the following year, the man met the 12-year-old girl via the Instagram social media platform. Despite learning her age, the accused arranged a meet-up with the girl at his home.
During the girl's visit, the man was alone at home and the pair had sex in his bedroom. The pair began dating afterwards.
Even though the man was investigated by the authorities over the sexual encounter, he continued to meet the girl to engage in sexual activity. This included having unprotected sex at a HDB staircase in February that year.
On 30 April 2019, the girl found out she was 10 weeks pregnant and had an abortion the following month. A paternity test showed that the man was 99.999 per cent likely to be the child's father, according to the prosecution.
The man, who enlisted for national service on the same day the girl had her abortion, continued to see the girl on weekends after booking out from camp and stayed at her home.
In June 2019, the pair had unprotected sex again. The man did not expect her to get pregnant as she just had an abortion.
Two months later, the man entered into a relationship with the 18-year-old girl. In January 2020, the two had an argument as he did not want the girl to leave his house. During the dispute, he slapped her cheek and kicked her lower back in anger.
The girl discovered she was pregnant in March that year and gave birth in July. Her relationship with the man ended in September 2020.
For sexually penetrating a minor under the age of 14, the man may be jailed up to 20 years, and fined or caned. For sexually penetrating a minor between the ages of 14 and 16, he may be jailed up to 10 years, or fined or both. For voluntarily causing hurt, he can be jailed up to three years, or fined up to $5,000 or both.
