Jeremy Best, the Idaho man who was allegedly found naked next to his deceased 10-month-old son and was arrested in connection with the murder of his pregnant wife, appeared shirtless and bereft in his first court appearance on Monday.

Best, 48, appeared shifty during the hearing and broke down several times as the judge read out his charges, which include two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife Kali Jean Randall, 38, and her unborn fetus. Best is not facing any charges in the death of his and Randall's infant son Zeke Best, the Associated Press reports, and authorities are awaiting for medical examiner's report on further details of the baby's cause of death.

Randall was found dead Thursday night at the family’s home in Victor, Idaho. Authorities released an Amber Alert shortly after discovering Best and Zeke were not in the residence. On Saturday, Best was allegedly found naked on the side of a road east of Idaho Falls near his dead infant by police this week, PEOPLE reported previously.

On Saturday, the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office said in a press release that Best was discovered in a sleeping bag on the side of a road. A group of hunters reported Best to authorities, before sheriff’s deputies identified him as the same man who was wanted by the Teton County Sheriff’s Office, police said.

On Monday, Best appeared in a Zoom court hearing shirtless and with scruffy hair as the judge introduced the case. As the judge read out the murder charges — both that could lead to death penalty — Best broke down numerous times.

The judge alleged Best shot Randall in the back and on her right breast. Jim Archibald, who East Idaho News identified as a death-penalty certified defense attorney, requested a competency review for Best, who swiftly unmuted his mic to say, “That’s not my attorney.”

The judge set a preliminary hearing date for Dec. 18 and said Best would be held without bond “because of the nature of allegations against" him.

As the judge concluded the meeting, Best said something behind his muted mic and shook his index finger at the screen. After the judge left the meeting, he appeared to show a hand gesture, which in sign language means “I love you.”

Randall's brother Brian Randall previously told PEOPLE his sister “was absolutely a genuine beautiful soul” and that he never suspected Best, her husband, of being anything but “a normal guy.”

"Sometimes maybe you don't know people,” Brian said, noting he was not aware of any conflicts between the couple.
