The cup holders can at least take solace that the injury does not appear to be a repeat of the hamstring problems which have plagued the player since last year.
Elsewhere, Grealish is in line to return after being sidelined with a groin injury since last month.
Ederson has also been ruled out after picking up while conceding the penalty in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool.
Reserve goalkeeper Stefan Ortega will have been the pick to play between the posts anyway, as Pep Guardiola like many others rotates his shot-stoppers for cup games.
