A 77-year-old man died of burns, while two of his neighbours were sent to hospital with breathing difficulties, after a fire at the man’s flat in Telok Blangah Crescent on Monday morning.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the fire, which took place on the eighth floor of Block 3, Telok Blangah Crescent at around 7:15am.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which was in the living room area, within five minutes and found the man’s burnt body at the scene. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, said the Police in a statement.

Residents on the same floor, as well as on the ninth and 10th, were also evacuated by both the SCDF and police as a precautionary measure, the SCDF added.

The two neighbours of the man, one of whom is a male in his 30s, and the other of which being a woman in her 80s, were staying several units away from the flat that was on fire. Both were sent to Singapore General Hospital after showing breathlessness.

Police are investigating the man's death, while the SCDF is probing the cause of the fire.
