Montreal police are investigating the death of a man following a shooting on a basketball court in the Lachine borough.

Police were called at around 7 p.m. Wednesday about a report of gunshots on Duff Court Street, near Esther-Blondin Street.

A spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) says the man was on a basketball court with other people when a suspect approached him and opened fire before running away.

Police say the 27-year-old victim had been shot at least once. He was rushed to hospital, where he died from his injuries. According to police, evidence collected suggests that the suspect and the victim knew each other.

Officers have questioned witnesses and are looking for footage. No arrests have been made.

Police have set up a command post on the scene and asked anyone with information to come and meet with investigators.

The death is the 17th homicide on the SPVM territory this year.
