Man held for murder of mother, grandmother jailed for drug offences, took drugs on day of deaths
SINGAPORE — A man accused of murdering his mother and grandmother in 2019 was sentenced to one year and ten months' jail on Thursday (11 November) after he admitted to possessing and consuming drugs, including on the day of the alleged murders.
Gabriel Lien Goh, 24, had been charged with the murder of his mother, 56-year-old Lee Soh Mui, and another 90-year-old woman believed to be his grandmother, at Block 7A Commonwealth Avenue on 27 October 2019.
Both women were found lying motionless in a seventh-floor unit and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Goh faces two charges of murder, both of which are still pending before the High Court and have been stood down for the time being.
On Thursday, Goh, appearing via videolink and in remand, pleaded guilty to one count of consumption and two counts of possessing drugs, with three other charges of a similar nature taken into consideration for his sentencing.
After Goh was arrested for murder on the evening of 27 October 2019, police officers recovered one packet of vegetable matter from his bedroom. The next day, police also seized two other containers containing vegetable matter, a paper wrapping containing vegetable matter and two packets containing three foils and nine stamps.
On 28 October, Goh's urine samples were found to contain Lysergide, a hallucinogen also known as LSD.
Goh admitted to consuming Lysergide on 27 October. He began consuming the drug in December 2018 and had ingested it three times before 27 October 2019.
Of the other items seized from Goh's house, four pieces of paper tested positive for Lysergide, while a packet, two containers and one paper wrapping containing no less than 4.43 grams of fragmented vegetable matter was analysed and found to contain tetrahydracannibol, which is found in cannabis.
Tetrahydracannibol and Lysergide are Class A controlled drugs listed in the First Schedule to the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Goh said that he had purchased the drugs from a man known as “Ah Wei” in Geylang. He would buy 25 to 40 grams of Cannabis from Ah Wei for about $330, a packet of synthetic cannabis for about $70 and Lysergide tabs for about $35 to $50 each.
Goh had bought drugs from Ah Wei more than ten times since 2018 and last purchased drugs from him around one to two months before he was arrested.
His sentence will be backdated to the day of his arrest on 27 October 2019. He will still remain in custody pending his murder charges.
