A 55-year-old man who groped his girlfriend’s 11-year-old daughter was on Tuesday (8 January) jailed for 20 months.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the victim’s identity, pleaded guilty at the State Courts to one of two charges of using criminal force to outrage the modesty of a minor. He was the long-term boyfriend of the victim’s mother.

On 12 April last year, while the man was alone with the girl at home, he started forcibly kissing the girl on the lips while simultaneously resting his right forearm on her chest. He then groped her breasts and private parts.

“Although the victim felt frightened and wanted to tell the accused ‘no’ and to stop, she could not say anything as the accused was still kissing her on the lips,” Deputy Public Prosecutor Sruthi Boppana told the court.

After a while, the man stopped his actions and left. Crying, the girl called her mother to tell her about the incident.

Her mother came home and in front of her daughter, she confronted the man, who confessed to his actions.

When the victim’s brother returned home shortly after, he heard his mother scolding the man for molesting the victim. The mother then asked him to call the police.

“Investigations further revealed that the accused felt that the complainant’s mother had been tempting him by leaving him alone with the victim at home,” said DPP Sruthi.

A medical report stated that the victim had been feeling sad and fearful since the incident. The victim also has difficulty trusting others.

The maximum punishment for molesting a person under 14 is up to five years’ jail, a fine, along with caning. Male offenders above 50 cannot be caned.
