Man jailed after killing couple in crash

A man who killed a husband and wife in a high-speed crash has been jailed.

Zia Akbar, 31, from London, had been driving his Mercedes at 101mph on a 50mph road in Stone, Staffordshire, in January 2022, when he was involved in a crash.

Barry Salt, 73, and his 74-year-old wife Megan, from Wednesbury, were taken to hospital after the collision on the A34 Fillybrooks, but died as a result of their injuries.

Akbar was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison after changing his plea to admit causing death by dangerous driving.

At a hearing at Stafford Crown Court on Tuesday, he was also disqualified from driving for nine years and eight months, with a requirement to take an extended retest.

PC Gavin Knott, from the Staffordshire and West Midlands Serious Collision Investigation unit, described Akbar's speed as "wholly dangerous".

"The collision was avoidable if Akbar had driven to the conditions that night. His actions have devastated the family of Barry and Megan," he said.
