Man dead after stabbing at Jane subway station

A man was fatally stabbed during an altercation at Jane subway station on Tuesday, Toronto police say.

Officers were initially called to the station shortly after 5:50 p.m., according to Det.-Sgt. Jason Davis.

Witnesses told investigators the altercation began on a bus arriving at Jane and then spilled into the bus bay, Davis said.

Paramedics took the victim to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police were still trying to contact his next of kin late Tuesday.

A male and female were seen running away from the station westbound on Bloor Street, Davis said. He did not immediately have any further descriptions of the pair.

Anyone with information or relevant video is urged to contact police or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.

In a statement on Tuesday, TTC CEO Rick Leary said the transit agency was "shocked and saddened" to learn of the stabbing.

"Our thoughts are with the victim's family and loved ones at this difficult time," he said.

Leary said the TTC will help the police however it can, including providing all video evidence.

He said safety of customers and employees is "paramount" on the TTC and he urged customers with information to call police.
