SINGAPORE — An intoxicated man who confronted his father about family issues ended up punching the latter in the face several times, a court heard.

Yap Bei Xing, 33, also threw a coffee table at the 68-year-old victim, grazing his shoulder.

At the State Courts on Monday (25 November), Yap was jailed for three weeks and fined $2,000. He had pleaded guilty to one charge each of causing hurt to his father and doing a rash act to endanger his father’s safety.

If he fails to pay the fine he will have to serve another week behind bars.

Childhood issues

At about 1am on 4 September, Yap drank alcohol in the living room of his family’s flat.

His father returned home at about 2am. “At this point the accused had become intoxicated from all the alcohol that he had drank,” said Deputy Public Prosecutor Sheldon Lim.

The victim had laid on the living room sofa to sleep when Yap went over and began talking to him. “The accused complained about his childhood to the victim, and his volume steadily increased as he became more upset,” said DPP Lim.

The father said he wanted to sleep and asked to be left alone.

“This enraged the accused, and the accused proceeded to punch the victim’s face several times, even as the victim was still lying down on the sofa,” added the prosecutor.

When the victim got up and tried to move away, Yap picked up the coffee table in the living room and threw it at him, grazing his shoulder.

The assailant then grabbed both of the father’s earlobes with his hands, and pushed his face into the window grilles.

Yap then heard his 61-year-old mother calling the police and stopped his assault. His mother told the police, “Can faster send officer, my son now making nuisance in my house.”

The father later visited a hospital and was found to have sustained a 3cm cut on the front of his scalp, a 1cm cut on the left earlobe and two cuts on the right ear measuring 1cm and 2cm. The wounds were cleaned and stitched up, and he was given three days of medical leave along with seven days’ light duty.

The maximum punishment for causing hurt is up to two years’ jail and a fine of up to $5,000. For committing a rash act that endangered his father’s personal safety, Yap could have been jailed for up to six months and fined up to $2,500.
