Manchester United vs Newcastle LIVE! Carabao Cup result, match stream and latest updates today
Manchester United vs Newcastle LIVE!
A repeat of last season's Carabao Cup final headlined the fourth round ties on Wednesday night. Newcastle headed to Old Trafford looking to avenge their 2-0 loss at Wembley back in February, when first-half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford successfully ended Manchester United's six-year trophy drought and denied their opponents a first piece of major domestic silverware since all the way back in 1955.
Erik ten Hag could really have used a win with his stock having fallen quickly and considerably since an impressive first campaign at the helm, with Sunday's listless 3-0 home defeat by City in the latest one-sided Manchester derby only serving to heap more pressure on the Dutchman. But all he got was another wretched 3-0 home loss thanks to goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock.
It is the first time that United have lost eight or more of their first 15 games to start a new season since the 1962/63 campaign, with another injury suffered by Casemiro on his return from an ankle problem sustained on international duty just compounding another chastening night on which serious questions will be asked over the manager's future. Back-to-back dismal 3-0 home defeats now for United, whose Carabao Cup title defence ends in wretched fashion as the pressure ramps up further on Ten Hag.
Newcastle have just their second win at this ground in half a century, marching into the quarter-finals as the 7,000 away fans serenade their heroes.
Ten Hag will inevitably be the story - but what a night for the Toon!

The euphoric 7,000 Newcastle supporters will be here for some time you feel!
Livramento has been named as man of the match by Gary Neville on Sky.
Fully deserved - he's been excellent tonight.

74 mins: That's a real chance for Manchester United to reduce the deficit as Antony slides through a lovely pass for Fernandes, who scoops an effort wide of the near post.

69 mins: The 7,000 away fans are in superb voice still, with ironic cheers greeting a woeful effort from Mount.
United's body language is horrible. Another chastening experience at Old Trafford.
Manchester United 0-3 Newcastle
21:44 , George Flood
65 mins: Ten Hag reacts to that third Newcastle goal with a triple change of his own.
Bruno Fernandes, Rashford and Hojlund replace Mejbri, Garnacho and Martial.
Manchester United 0-3 Newcastle
21:43 , George Flood
64 mins: The loud 'sacked in the morning' chants from a bouncing away end resume against Ten Hag.
Newcastle now send on Wilson and Guimaraes for Gordon and Willock.
GOAL! Manchester United 0-3 Newcastle | Joe Willock 61'
21:38 , George Flood
61 mins: What a goal!
It's been all Manchester United in this second half so far, but now the game looks beyond them after a third Newcastle effort against the run of play.
Amrabat has been good since coming on but is crucially dispossessed there by Joelinton, allowing Willock to embark on a thrusting run.
Gordon's run takes the attention of Maguire and Lindelof, giving Willock the freedom of Old Trafford to go to the edge of the box and slot coolly beyond Onana into the bottom corner.
This is beyond crisis now for Ten Hag.
Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle
21:37 , George Flood
57 mins: A couple of home players in the wars in this second half with Mejbri receiving a hand to the face a few moments ago and now Garnacho limping after a superb sliding challenge from the impressive Livramento.
Newcastle still with that two-goal advantage, but they are inviting a lot of pressure coming up to the hour mark and may be considering some changes of their own soon with Eddie Howe and assistant Graeme Jones deep in discussion on the touchline.
Dan Burn to firm up the defence, maybe Bruno Guimaraes to help wrestle back some control in midfield?
Wilson would also give them another quick threat on the counter.
Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle
21:34 , George Flood
55 mins: A really promising move that from United, with Amrabat a much more solid presence in midfield than Casemiro dictating the play.
Martial and Antony link up wonderfully down the right, but the Brazilian wastes the chance as he cuts in on his left foot and blasts into the stands.
So frustrating.
Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle
21:33 , George Flood
54 mins: Mejbri has been trying to gee up the Old Trafford crowd but I think he'd be wiser to keep cool given that he is almost certainly one more foul away from a sending off here.
United remain on the attack and Amrabat fires high and wide after being teed up outside the box by fellow half-time arrival Wan-Bissaka.
Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle
21:31 , George Flood
50 mins: This is intriguing stuff now with Manchester United far more purposeful and sustaining some pressure.
But one more Newcastle goal will kill this tie and they look handy on the counter, with Wan-Bissaka and Reguilon pushing on from full-back and leaving Maguire and Lindelof exposed.
Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle
21:28 , George Flood
49 mins: We should mention that Lindelof has taken the captain's armband for United with Casemiro going off and Bruno Fernandes still on the bench for now.
Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle
21:27 , George Flood
48 mins: Wan-Bissaka has already given United a spark down that right flank.
His sliding cross is met by Martial at the front post, but it's deflected crucially into the side netting by an attentive Krafth.
A long way back for the hosts, but they have started this second half with far more energy and purpose.
Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle
21:26 , George Flood
46 mins: Amrabat's first involvement is to draw a foul from Willock that earns the former Arsenal man a booking.
Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle
21:23 , George Flood
45 mins: Back underway at Old Trafford!
Ten Hag has indeed make changes at the break, with the fit-again Wan-Bissaka and Amrabat on.
Off go Dalot and Casemiro, both of whom were very poor in that first half.
Mejbri stays on.
21:16 , George Flood
A sumptuous volley from Hall, who had a great first half for Newcastle.
But United were too busy arguing with the referee in the build-up, as Gary Neville laments on commentary.
Dalot too easily beaten initially and it's a weak header from Maguire.
So much for United to work on.

Half-time
Loud boos ring out around Old Trafford after another awful 45 minutes from Manchester United.
Newcastle look very good value for their two-goal lead courtesy of substitute Almiron's powerful finish and a fine volley from Chelsea loanee Hall.
The pressure ramps up even further on Ten Hag, who will surely look to his strong bench at the break.
Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle
21:06 , George Flood
48 mins: Both sides are pressing hard at the end of this first half, with Mount forcing a save from Dubravka from some way out.
Now Newcastle are quickly back in the ascendancy and hunting a third goal before the break with the 'oles' greeting every pass from the away end.
Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle
21:03 , George Flood
46 mins: Into five minutes of added time at the end of this first half.
Newcastle warned not to get too comfortable as Dalot arrows a low strike narrowly wide of Dubravka's far post.
Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle
20:59 , George Flood
40 mins: It's just not happening at all for Manchester United and Ten Hag must be weighing up major changes at half-time.
Mejbri has been down but is now back up, with Onana saving from Willock.
Nothing coming at the other end.
GOAL! Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle | Lewis Hall 36'
20:52 , George Flood
36 mins: Newcastle double their lead and Old Trafford is stunned!
United are still bickering with the referee as the visitors take a quick free-kick and pour forward down the left flank.
Almiron scoops a lovely pass through for Willock, with Dalot getting back in but unable to stop his cross for Gordon that is headed away meekly by Maguire, whose clearance is dispatched wonderfully into the far bottom corner with a sweet left-footed volley from Chelsea loanee Hall.
What a strike from the teenager! Brilliant anticipation and technique. Manchester United are in utter disarray here as the pressure piles on Erik ten Hag.
Manchester United 0-1 Newcastle
20:52 , George Flood
34 mins: Very loud chants of 'you're getting sacked in the morning' are currently being aimed at Ten Hag from the packed and jubilant away end.
Reguilon has just blasted into row z from outside the box after being teed up by a sliding Mejbri.
Manchester United 0-1 Newcastle
20:51 , George Flood
31 mins: The hosts have tried to launch a quick fightback, with Mount poking wide at the front post after Garnacho's low cross.
Mount was also penalised for handball as he rose in the box to try and meet Antony's ball that was just missed by the jumping Martial.
GOAL! Manchester United 0-1 Newcastle | Miguel Almiron 29'
20:45 , George Flood
29 mins: 7,000 away fans erupt as Newcastle take the lead!
Garnacho is dispossessed on the attack by Livramento, who bursts forward and breezes past Mount and Mejbri as if they aren't even there.
He picks out the run of substitute Almiron, who is in behind the sleeping Dalot and thunders past Onana on the stretch.
It had been coming. More misery for Ten Hag.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:44 , George Flood
26 mins: None of United's strong bench are warming up at the moment so Ten Hag is presumably content to leave Mejbri on for now.
Amrabat, Fernandes, Eriksen or McTominay could all step into midfield if required.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:42 , George Flood
23 mins: Did Mejbri just throw the ball away there?!
Ten Hag may have a decision to make with regards to the Tunisian youngster very soon.
He's clearly eager to make an impression, but looks a walking red card at the moment.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:39 , George Flood
21 mins: United fail to deal with a simple throw-in and Joelinton tees up Ritchie for a sliced shot that is skewed well off target.
Newcastle doing all the running at the moment.
Manchester United look half-asleep - still a hangover from the derby debacle?
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:37 , George Flood
19 mins: Really poor from the hosts at the minute.
They are looking very shaky indeed in midfield and now Casemiro cuts down Willock again and joins Mejbri in the book.
He shakes his head in defiance, but can have few complaints.
Two midfielders already on bookings will be a huge concern for Ten Hag here.
They see off the latest free-kick into the box, though.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:35 , George Flood
17 mins: Should Manchester United be down to 10 men here?!
Just minutes after smashing into Longstaff and receiving a deserved yellow, Mejbri has just left one on Krafth.
He gets away with it and no VAR tonight means there is no chance for this to be looked at.
He's a very lucky boy and needs to calm down, fast.
He's walking a disciplinary tightrope from here.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:33 , George Flood
16 mins: Newcastle are probing now after Casemiro's clumsy foul on Willock gives Ritchie the chance to flight a decent free-kick into the box that is seen behind at the back post.
Ritchie's corner from the right is then headed away by Maguire, who got up well above Joelinton to clear.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:31 , George Flood
14 mins: The first yellow card of the evening is deservedly shown to Mejbri, who needlessly clatters into Longstaff after the stand-in Newcastle captain had won a header.
A very foolish booking for the youngster.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:30 , George Flood
12 mins: Howe doing his best Marcelo Bielsa impression at the moment as he crouches on the touchline, already taking copious notes.
The first shot in anger of the night comes from Casemiro, whose scruffy left-footed low drive is easily held by Dubravka.
Newcastle had been caught dwelling on the ball and Martial and Garnacho linked up well down the left, with Antony laying off to his fellow Brazilian on the edge of the box.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:28 , George Flood
11 mins: Solid defensive header from Lindelof to see off the danger posed by Gordon following a long ball forward.
Newcastle will have to be smarter than that to utilise their makeshift striker, who will want balls in behind to try and use his pace to expose Lindelof and Maguire.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:26 , George Flood
9 mins: Manchester United pressing well and now dominating the early possession at Old Trafford.
But the casual Antony is too easily dispossessed by Hall as Newcastle try to launch a swift counter-attack.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:25 , George Flood
8 mins: This match has really yet to get going with both sides struggling for any fluency or rhythm and giving the ball away frequently.
Joelinton pulls back Reguilon and is lucky not to have his name taken.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:22 , George Flood
5 mins: It's worth noting that Targett had surprisingly been lining up in midfield for Newcastle, with Hall at full-back.
Gordon then through the middle up front with Joelinton on the left.
Presumably Joelinton will now drop back into midfield with Almiron flanking Gordon.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:20 , George Flood
3 mins: Targett now limping off in a real blow for Howe as his absentee list continues to grow.
It's Miguel Almiron that is coming on for Newcastle in a very early change that will necessitate a tactical shift.
Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle
20:18 , George Flood
2 mins: Another injury concern for Newcastle early on here with Targett down and in some pain after a challenge from Martial.
It was an awkward landing and he's receiving treatment. I think he's going to be going off shortly.
Manchester United vs Newcastle
20:17 , George Flood
Off and running at Old Trafford!
Both sides in their familiar home strips, with Rob Jones tonight's referee.
Great noise at kick-off. Let's hope for a cracker despite all the changes.
Manchester United vs Newcastle
20:15 , George Flood
Here come the teams at Old Trafford!
No doubt plenty of nerves around the place tonight.
Ten Hag really needs a win. Fall behind early or lose again at home and this could turn a bit ugly.
20:11 , George Flood
There seems to be a bit of debate on social media as to how exactly Newcastle are lining up tonight, with a bit of a jumbled team named by Howe featuring no fewer than five natural full-backs and no out-and-out strikers.
Is it a back four with Krafth and Dummett as centre-backs and Livramento and Targett as the full-backs, with Hall in midfield with Willock and Longstaff and Gordon leading the line flanked by Joelinton and Ritchie?
Or is it a back three with Targett joining Krafth and Dummett in the middle and Livramento and Hall as wing-backs?
We'll find out soon enough!
Newcastle's Old Trafford hoodoo
20:08 , George Flood
Newcastle have remarkably only won on one of their last 41 visits to Old Trafford dating back to 1972, with French midfielder Yohan Cabaye striking a memorable winner back in 2013 under Alan Pardew.
However, they did gain initial revenge for their Carabao Cup final defeat by winning 2-0 at St James' Park in the Premier League back in April, with Willock and Wilson on the scoresheet in the second half that day.
20:04 , George Flood
Meanwhile, Howe says his rotation tonight is partly due to protecting some key players amid a demanding fixture list but also to do with giving other squad players a chance to impress.
He also praises Longstaff ahead of his 150th Newcastle appearance and salutes the professionalism and perseverance of Swedish defender Emil Krafth, who is back in action tonight for the first time since suffering a serious ACL injury against Tranmere in this competition last August

In his pre-match interview with Sky Sports, Ten Hag insists that he has picked a strong enough team to advance through to the quarter-finals tonight.
He's urged his team to bounce back quickly from the Manchester derby debacle and reward United's fans with a strong home win, also praising the leadership skills of stand-in captain Casemiro.
Ten Hag is also happy with the strength of his imposing-looking bench this evening

So while the returning Casemiro captains Manchester United tonight with Bruno Fernandes on the bench, Sean Longstaff skippers Newcastle on his 150th appearance for the club as Jamaal Lascelles and deputy Kieran Trippier are both rested.

Eight Newcastle changes as Gordon leads attack
19:36 , George Flood
Newcastle also ring the changes with eight from Eddie Howe.
Only Sean Longstaff, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon keep their starting places after the 2-2 draw at Wolves on Saturday, with the latter leading the attack with Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron dropping to the bench.
Martin Dubravka deputises in goal for Nick Pope against the team for whom he played on loan last season, with Loris Karius on the bench.
In defence, Kieran Trippier, captain Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar and Dan Burn make way for Tino Livramento, Emil Krafth, Paul Dummett and Matt Targett.
Lewis Hall also comes in along with the fit-again Joe Willock and Matt Ritchie, with Bruno Guimaraes also only on the bench.
Youngsters Amadou Diallo and Ben Parkinson come into the matchday squad.
Casemiro returns as Ten Hag makes seven changes
19:30 , George Flood
So that's seven changes in total from Ten Hag to the side that started against City, with only Andre Onana, Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof retaining their starting berths.
It's all change otherwise, with Casemiro fit enough to start and taking the captain's armband as he lines up in midfield alongside Mason Mount and young Hannibal Mejbri.
Sergio Reguilon also starts as Lindelof shifts into a central defensive two with Maguire.
Skipper Bruno Fernandes, Jonny Evans, Sofyan Amrabat, Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay all drop to the bench, as do Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford.
Antony, Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial all get their chances in attack instead.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka is fit enough for the bench after injury, but there is no Raphael Varane at all tonight.
Kobbie Mainoo is not involved either.
Newcastle lineup
19:21 , George Flood
Starting XI: Dubravka, Livramento, Krafth, Dummett, Targett, Hall, Longstaff, Willock, Ritchie, Joelinton, Gordon
Subs: Karius, Trippier, Lascelles, Wilson, Almiron, Burn, Bruno Guimaraes, Diallo, Parkinson
Manchester United lineup
19:17 , George Flood
Starting XI: Onana, Dalot, Maguire, Lindelof, Reguilon, Casemiro, Hannibal, Mount, Antony, Garnacho, Martial
Subs: Bayindir, Evans, Wan-Bissaka, Amrabat, Fernandes, Eriksen, McTominay, Hojlund, Rashford
Man United starlet Mainoo shines after injury return
19:08 , George Flood
It will be interesting to see if Kobbie Mainoo is involved for Manchester United tonight.
The highly-regarded teenage midfielder had been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury during pre-season.
Mainoo experienced a minor setback in his recovery, but made his return for the youngsters against FC Copenhagen last week and then impressed hugely with two stylish assists against Salford in the EFL Trophy last night.
I'm sure United fans would love to see him inject some energy, trickery and pace into this underperforming senior team off the bench this evening.
Official team news should be with us very shortly...
Howe: Everbody has to step up amid Newcastle injuries
19:01 , George Flood
Newcastle managed to keep relatively injury-free last season, but now their fitness issues are mounting and may leave Eddie Howe needing to make some tough selection decisions as he plots changes tonight.
"You just have to roll with the punches, absorb the hits and that's what we're going to try to do. It's not ideal for us, especially with the season to last year - it's a totally different feel," he said this week.
"We're not in that position now so we're going to need everybody in the squad to step up. The key message is everyone has to give a bit more. To not use our squad (on Tuesday) would be really foolish.
"(Last season) whet the appetite for us, we want this on a more regular basis, we're determined to get back there. That's the challenge for us - can we? Tomorrow will dictate what we do in this competition.
"It's going to be a bit of a juggling act for us, but we do have the players that can be flexible and can play different positions. It's one of the strengths of our squad."
Sir Bobby Charlton tributes continue
18:49 , George Flood
Manchester United will continue to pay tribute to the late, great Sir Bobby Charlton tonight.
The thousands of floral tributes and memorabilia left around the 'Holy Trinity' statue of Charlton, George Best and Denis Law at Old Trafford has been moved to the nearby Old Trafford Museum, where it will sit alongside tributes to the legendary Sir Matt Busby.
United announced yesterday that Charlton's funeral service would take place on Monday November 13, with the procession set to pass by Old Trafford en route to Manchester Cathedral in order to give fans a chance to say a final farewell.
A coroner ruled earlier today that United and England icon Charlton died as the result of an accidental fall in a nursing home, where he had been receiving respite care for dementia.
Eddie Howe: Newcastle not motivated by revenge
18:36 , George Flood
Eddie Howe has dismissed any notion that revenge for last season's painful Wembley loss is the primary source of motivation for his Newcastle side at Old Trafford tonight.
"That's not our emotion as I sit here now. Our emotion is just to try to prepare and win the game. One win and we're into the quarter-final of the competition. We loved our run in it last year," he said.
"Manchester United are a top team with top players. One of the key tests of any team is how you respond to setbacks. That's always what you're looking to do when you're in the manager's position.
"They've got some very good results lately and have won some games late. Whenever you play Manchester City, as we know they're very, very difficult games.
"When you go into a cup tie, to a degree you leave that form behind. This is a one-off game and I'm sure both teams will be motivated to try and win."
Casemiro hints at Manchester United return tonight

Ten Hag has tetchy exchange over Varane benching
18:19 , George Flood
The issue of Varane being benched in favour of starting the 35-year-old Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire for the inevitable humbling by City led to a tetchy exchange between the under-pressure Ten Hag and a reporter on Sunday.
"They played very well, I think, the centre," Ten Hag said. "With Onana they played a very good game. Just what I expected.
"You know they will come pressures and no one can actually be surprised. I said it from the beginning, I need the players on the left side who can make angles and also to step in and, especially against City, with the side they press us you have to step in to get the press on them and I think they did this very well."
Pressed again on the tactical reasons behind Varane's omission, a miffed Ten Hag added: "I said it from the start that I was here and I just explained it to the question, so I have to explain again? Sorry, I said why.
"When you face City, they will go up to press and then to play with Rapha and Maguire over the left, that can give problems and then you end up only kicking long balls.
"He is for me, better on the right, Harry, especially against teams pressing high and second is you have to step in over that side and that was our tactic: to step in over (Julian) Alvarez and get Sofyan (Amrabat) higher to get press on their build-up and that's why."
Manchester United vs Newcastle prediction
18:04 , George Flood
Manchester United do not look nearly as strong as last season but do have more depth available now.
With Howe expected to rotate what is already an injury-stricken Newcastle squad, the under-fire Ten Hag must be confident of sealing what would be a crucial win both for him personally and his team.
Manchester United to win, 2-1.
Newcastle team news
17:57 , George Flood
Eddie Howe confirmed at his pre-match press conference that none of Newcastle's injured players would recover in time to play tonight.
That means that Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Elliot Anderson, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, Javier Manquillo and Lewis Miley all remain out, while Sandro Tonali won't play again this season following his 10-month ban for betting violations that officially began on Friday.
Despite his lengthy list of absentees, Howe is expected to make changes and rotate his side tonight.
That means the likes of Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock could all start.
Manchester United team news
17:51 , George Flood
Manchester United's main question mark tonight is over Casemiro, one of their scorers from the final back in February who has remained doubtful despite returning to full training after a combination of suspension and an ankle injury picked up on Brazil duty during the international break.
Early whispers on social media suggest that he could well be back in the matchday squad tonight, so we shall see.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka also needs a late fitness test after returning to training at Carrington last week following a hamstring injury lay-off.
United remain without the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Amad Diallo however, while Jadon Sancho is still unavailable for selection.
Raphael Varane will be hoping to start after controversially being benched in favour of Jonny Evans for the Manchester derby embarrassment.

Eight months have passed since Manchester United and Newcastle clashed at Wembley in the 2022/23 Carabao Cup final, with the two sides meeting again in the same competition in the fourth round tonight.
A quarter-final spot is on the line this time at Old Trafford in the standout tie of the last 16, which has the feel of a very important game for Erik ten Hag.
It is remarkable just how quickly and how much his stock has fallen in a relatively short space of time after his successful first season at the helm in which he ended United's six-year trophy drought courtesy of those first-half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford in the 2-0 win over Newcastle and ensured a solid third-place finish in the Premier League.
His side have lost seven matches across all competitions already this term, however, with Sunday's woeful 3-0 home loss to City in the latest one-sided Manchester derby only increasing fan frustration and piling more pressure on Ten Hag.
Progression feels important tonight despite the lack of general recognition for the Carabao Cup, while another loss would really see questions asked of his future in the job.
