Manchester United vs Wolves LIVE!

Manchester United produced a hugely unconvincing opening Premier League display at Old Trafford on Monday night, but still managed to seal all three points to kick off the new season. Erik ten Hag’s team were worryingly flat and well below par throughout the contest, lacking any sort of rhythm, fluency or momentum in attack and opened up countless times on the counter through the middle.

Wolves created several strong opportunities to score as their brave performance in their first game under new boss Gary O’Neil provided a decent riposte to gloomy pre-season predictions of a looming relegation battle, led by the impressive Matheus Cunha up front. However, the Brazilian forward hit the post with Wolves’ best chance of the night as the likes of Pedro Neto, Pablo Sarabia, Hwang-Hee chan and Fabio Silva also failed to find the net either side of Raphael Varane’s match-winning point-blank header in the 76th minute.

Wolves should surely have had a penalty deep into second-half stoppage time when United debutant Andre Onana wiped out substitute Sasa Kalajdzic, but somehow nothing was given after a VAR check. Follow Manchester United vs Wolves reaction live below!

Full-time

Manchester United survive... just!

They were miles off the pace tonight but pick up an opening three points in the Premier League thanks to Raphael Varane’s late point-blank header.

Wolves had countless chances to score but just couldn’t take them, despite an inspired performance from Matheus Cunha up top.

Goals proving their kryptonite once again. But on that evidence, they won’t go down. They should definitely have had a late, late penalty as well.

Desperately unlucky.

Manchester United 1-0 Wolves

21:58 , George Flood

97 mins: Now then!

Onana has just come out to try and claim a deep cross to the back post but completely and utterly wiped out Kalajdzic without getting near the ball.

Wolves are screaming for a penalty, but referee Simon Hooper is unmoved and somehow the VAR Michael Salisbury doesn’t intervene.

That’s got to be a penalty, surely?! Surely?!

O’Neil is fuming on the touchline and receives a yellow card for his protests.

As if Wolves weren’t feeling hard done by enough. Got to sympathise with them there.

Manchester United 1-0 Wolves

94 mins: United are under siege in stoppage time!

Semedo and Silva combine to tee up Hwang, who goes outside Wan-Bissaka, but the right-back gets a vital block on his shot.

Wolves pressing so hard for a last-gasp leveller.

Manchester United 1-0 Wolves

21:53 , George Flood

91 mins: That’s a key block from Shaw after another attempt from Silva inside the box.

Will be so hard on Wolves if they don’t get anything from this game.

But time is very quickly running out for Gary O’Neil’s men.

Manchester United 1-0 Wolves

21:51 , George Flood

90 mins: Still Wolves come but it just won’t sit up for Silva and Onana intervenes.

Kalajdzic had been involved quickly, but a free-kick towards the big Austrian was claimed by Onana, who has been solid tonight on his competitive debut.

SEVEN minutes of added time for Wolves to find a more-than-deserved equaliser here.

Manchester United 1-0 Wolves

21:50 , George Flood

87 mins: Ten Hag sends on Scott McTominay in place of Rashford.

For Wolves, the towering Sasa Kalajdzic is on for his first appearance for almost a year after he suffered a serious knee injury on his debut last September.

He should provide a real aerial threat in the final few minutes.

Manchester United 1-0 Wolves

21:47 , George Flood

85 mins: It’s end-to-end stuff as we enter the final five minutes of the 90 at Old Trafford.

Fernandes’ dangerous cross is flicked by Rashford and just evades Pellistri at the back post.

At the other end, Gomes makes a great challenge near the byline and feeds Silva, whose latest shot is saved.

A couple of opportunities now for Silva since coming on.

Manchester United 1-0 Wolves

21:45 , George Flood

82 mins: Wolves, to their credit, haven’t been flattened by that Varane goal and are still pushing at Old Trafford.

Gomes tees up Silva via a sliding Shaw, with Onana saving comfortably at his near post.

Manchester United 1-0 Wolves

21:43 , George Flood

79 mins: Wolves are almost caught pushing too many players on looking for the equaliser.

The space really opens up for Rashford, but he’s eventually crowded out by retreating defenders inside the box.

Manchester United 1-0 Wolves

21:42 , George Flood

78 mins: United sent on Facundo Pellistri after scoring, with Antony withdrawn.

Wolves introduced Hugo Bueno and Fabio Silva in place of Cunha and Ait-Nouri.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Wolves | Raphael Varane 76'

21:36 , George Flood

76 mins: Now they have!

It’s utter heartbreak for spirited Wolves as Varane heads in Wan-Bissaka’s lofted pass from point-blank range after great work from Bruno Fernandes, who dinked a lovely ball into his right-back.

Deadlock broken with less than 15 minutes to play at Old Trafford.

They don’t deserve it, but United are in front. Wolves regretting those countless missed opportunities.

Can they fight back?

75 mins: United are on the attack but it’s all still so messy and unconvincing.

They can’t break Wolves down.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:33 , George Flood

72 mins: Neto fires straight at Onana from inside the box!

Superb again from the driving Cunha, who got into the area and linked up well with Hwang.

The loose ball fell nicely for Neto, who just had to aim it either side of the goalkeeper.

Wolves really, really should be ahead. Chance after chance.

United are so flat and off the pace. So open through the middle to the counters.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:31 , George Flood

69 mins: Neto into the book now for dissent.

Eriksen involved quickly for United, but his cross is gathered by Jose Sa.

More pressure from Wolves at the other end.

68 mins: Eriksen and Sancho replace Mount and Garnacho.

A quiet debut for Mount and Garnacho was poor.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:28 , George Flood

66 mins: Still nothing doing whatsoever for United, who are preparing to send on both Christian Eriksen and Jadon Sancho shortly in an attempt by Ten Hag to deliver some sort of spark.

It’s still Wolves looking the more likely to break the deadlock in this second half, with Ait-Nouri springing forward but failing to pick out an angry Neto.

Cunha has been so good tonight.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:25 , George Flood

64 mins: That’s a really poor challenge from Wan-Bissaka on substitute Hwang. Not sure how he’s swerved a yellow card there.

Wolves have a chance to deliver a free-kick into the box from wide on the left, but the ball bounces wide awkwardly off the shoulder of Cunha.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:24 , George Flood

62 mins: South Korean forward Hwang Hee-chan is coming on for Wolves, with Sarabia the man replaced.

O’Neil turning to his bench for the first time tonight, sending on a note for the attention of Nunes, who doesn’t give it too much attention.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:22 , George Flood

60 mins: On the hour mark, United up the tempo and force another corner.

It’s short to Antony, who bends an effort wide of the far post. Was that a shot or a cross?

Either way it drifts behind for a Jose Sa goal kick.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:21 , George Flood

59 mins: Rashford runs at Lemina, who is on a yellow card, and tries to cut back for Antony inside the box.

The loose ball falls for Garnacho, who steps inside Nunes before lashing an effort well off target.

His shooting has been rather wild so far tonight.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:20 , George Flood

57 mins: A fierce drive from Neto hits the face of a dazed Shaw, who stays down for a few moments.

Wolves force a corner and there’s a spot of wrestling between the mismatched Antony and Dawson, who are both spoken to by the referee.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:17 , George Flood

54 mins: Cunha has been very dangerous indeed for Wolves so far tonight and charges forward again unchallenged, with the freedom of Old Trafford at his back.

He ends up trying to curve a low effort that is tipped behind by Onana.

United look very suspect through the spine of the team tonight. They could and should be behind.

Further changes coming soon from Ten Hag?

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:14 , George Flood

52 mins: A worrying moment from Jose Sa as he comes racing over to try and thwart Antony, who lobs him easily.

Luckily for Wolves, Dawson is in the right place to head the ball up and over his own goal.

Sa was never getting to that, terrible goalkeeping.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:11 , George Flood

49 mins: How have Wolves not scored there?!

Matheus Nunes strides forward brilliantly from deep inside his own half to tee up a dangerous counter.

He releases Sarabia, whose pass is flicked to the back post by Neto, with Cunha behind Varane and having the goal at his mercy.

But leaning back, he hits it against the post and over. What a chance, he’s got to score.

Wolves may well live to regret that. A huge let-off for United.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:09 , George Flood

47 mins: Onana shows his speed and quick reflexes that led to United paying £47.2m to sign him from Inter Milan as David de Gea’s replacement in July.

Neto looks to get down the outside of Shaw and get a shot away from a tough angle, but the Cameroon international races across to make the intervention.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

21:06 , George Flood

United are engaged in a huddle ahead of the second half.

Lisandro Martinez is off at the break, presumably because he’s struggling on that yellow card rather than any injury setback.

It’s Victor Lindelof - rather than Harry Maguire - who replaces the Argentine.

No changes from Wolves, who will want more of the same here. Back underway.

21:02 , George Flood

Ten Hag will hope that Hojlund can get himself fit as soon as possible. A real lack of cutting edge from United so far tonight.

Half-time

Goalless at the break at Old Trafford, with two of the best chances to date falling for Wolves pair Pablo Sarabia and the impressive Matheus Cunha.

United have had some useful moments in patches, but they have struggled to find much rhythm or momentum so far and it’s all very disjointed in attack.

Ten Hag will be frustrated, but Gary O’Neil delighted at the moment.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:51 , George Flood

47 mins: This time it’s Wolves caught in possession and United quickly play in Rashford, whose shot is deflected behind.

Varane has a free header from the resulting corner to end the half, but he’s distracted by the two players jumping in front of him and ends up steering the ball well wide.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:50 , George Flood

45 mins: Just the two minutes of added time signalled at the end of this first half - we’ve got used to seeing much more than that so far this season.

United threaten Wolves once more, but the disciplined and well-drilled visitors have plenty of gold shirts back inside the box and captain Max Kilman - who signed a new five-year contract at Molineux this week - blocks Antony’s hopeful shot.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:48 , George Flood

43 mins: Sloppy again from United and Wolves charge forward on the counter, with Shaw retrospectively booked for a bad challenge on Sarabia.

It’s an eye-catching run from Neto, but United get enough bodies back into their own box and the danger is averted.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:44 , George Flood

41 mins: United are having more joy as we approach half-time, with Martinez playing a superb volleyed pass into Rashford, who turns sharply.

The ball ends up being lashed well wide by Garnacho, who has had a difficult first half up against Semedo.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:43 , George Flood

39 mins: Manchester United’s penalty appeals are waved away after Wan-Bissaka gets to the byline well and stands up a back-post cross for Rashford, whose header strikes the arm of Semedo at close range.

It was by his side and he had no control over it, certainly not making his body unnaturally bigger. No spot-kick, good decision.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:41 , George Flood

37 mins: Shaw whips the ball into the six-yard box and it’s spilled by Jose Sa, with Matheus Nunes brought down by Garnacho before Antony’s strike is blocked.

The whistle has gone for that foul by Garnacho, much to Wolves’ relief. All got a bit messy for them there.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:39 , George Flood

34 mins: Ait-Nouri takes too long over a throw-in and has his name taken. The Algerian full-back should have been booked earlier as well for hauling down Antony.

The home crowd’s frustration is ramping up here as United continue to misplace pass after pass. They look so disjointed in attack.

The celebrated centre-back pairing of Varane and Martinez doesn’t look so solid either, with the Argentine in particular struggling with Cunha.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:35 , George Flood

32 mins: It’s getting a little bit feisty now out there with Matheus Cunha back on his feet, Lemina now down and Rashford also having a little nibble.

Suddenly Wolves spring forward again and the very sharp Cunha fires a low shot from inside the box just wide of Onana’s far post.

The best two chances of the first half so far have fallen to the visitors.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:33 , George Flood

30 mins: It’s just not happening for United so far tonight.

They look really short of ideas on the ball and the crowd are getting a bit frustrated.

Matheus Cunha down after a kick to the knee from Casemiro, while Joao Gomes claimed to have caught a stray arm to the face from Mount a few moments ago.

27 mins: Mario Lemina joins Martinez in the book after taking down Garnacho to prevent a United counter-attack.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

26 mins: Chance for Wolves!

Brilliant from Matheus Cunha, who powers forward on the counter from his own half, riding the challenge of Casemiro and breezing past Martinez.

He ends up playing in Sarabia, whose low strike is deflected narrowly wide of the far post by Raphael Varane.

Craig Dawson connects with the corner, but United eventually clear.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:28 , George Flood

23 mins: Good defending from Wolves inside the box to see off another half-hearted and rather disjointed United attack.

After pressing hard early on, O’Neil’s side now seem content to sit off and let the hosts dominate possession.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:26 , George Flood

21 mins: There have been some bright moments and touches from United during this opening 20 minutes or so, but they are unable to sustain their livelier attacks, which are quickly fizzling out.

Bruno Fernandes causes Ait-Nouri trouble with a clipped ball over the top into the box for Wan-Bissaka, but it’s cleared.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:23 , George Flood

19 mins: United are frequently looking to Garnacho to provide a spark down that left-hand side, but there’s nothing doing for him at the moment.

Cracking ball from Onana to find the Argentine, though.

17 mins: The first yellow card of the evening goes to Lisandro Martinez, who commits to a big sliding challenge on a pacy Pedro Neto and misses the ball completely as he chops down the Portuguese winger instead.

It’s a definite booking and the referee doesn’t hesitate.

That was nifty from Wolves though, making United pay for a botched attack of their own and launching a swift counter.

However, the resulting free-kick delivery is poor and Onana claims comfortably.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:18 , George Flood

16 mins: A lack of ideas and movement from United at the moment, with Onana seeing plenty of the ball at his feet.

Wolves are shutting down the space well and holding their shape for the most part.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:17 , George Flood

14 mins: Bruno Fernandes links up with Antony out by the right touchline and the Brazilian is promptly hauled down by a not-so-subtle Rayan Ait-Nouri, who is lucky to avoid a booking.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:15 , George Flood

12 mins: Both sides are looking panicky when trying to play out from the back so far.

This time it’s Joao Gomes who gives possession away for Wolves and United look to capitalise with a corner, but it’s flicked away again by a gold shirt at the front post.

Here come United again but Garnacho, lining up on the left of Rashford with Antony on the right, is flagged offside.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:13 , George Flood

11 mins: The first chance of the evening falls to United, with a swift break ending in an onrushing Jose Sa saving from Rashford with his legs.

A real warning for Wolves after an otherwise bright opening.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:12 , George Flood

10 mins: A good pace to this game early on as Wolves are caught in possession and Antony scampers forward, but United can’t fashion a chance.

Then comes Wolves and a vital touch from Casemiro inside the box prevents Semedo’s cut-back from finding Pedro Neto.

Decent start from O’Neil’s men.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:10 , George Flood

7 mins: An early threat from Mount as he looks to pick up a decent lofted ball into the box, with Wolves having to clear behind.

Mount goes over to take the corner, with Jose Sa impeded as he punches clear. A pressure-relieving free-kick is awarded to the visitors by referee Simon Hooper.

Rashford is playing centrally for United as expected, but he’s not been involved yet.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

5 mins: Some good battles in midfield early on here, with Jose Sa booting clear for Wolves but neither side able to consistently hold possession so far.

A sliding Garnacho takes a painful blow on the leg from Sarabia, but he’s quickly back on his feet.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:06 , George Flood

3 mins: Wolves are posing a useful threat on the counter-attack early on here, springing forward with menace after winning possession back through Nelson Semedo.

They are pressing well in the middle and up top with Matheus Cunha putting himself about, which will please Gary O’Neil.

A couple of careless fouls given away in the process, but they are harrying United and making life uncomfortable in the early going.

Manchester United 0-0 Wolves

20:04 , George Flood

1 min: Some early touches for Onana with his feet in the United box.

But it’s all too casual from the hosts on the edge of their own area and Bruno Fernandes gifts possession straight to a lurking Pedro Neto, with Luke Shaw having to make an important challenge to snuff out the danger.

With re-signed full-back Matt Doherty only on the bench tonight, it means that Wolves are the only team in the whole of the Premier League to go into the first weekend of fixtures without a new signing starting.

A damning indictment of their transfer approach - or lack thereof - this summer that so enraged the departed Julen Lopetegui.

Wolves will hope such a lack of action does not yet lead to relegation.

Wolves team lacking focal point up front

19:27 , George Flood

Wolves fans on social media don’t seem too thrilled with Gary O’Neil’s first team selection, it must be said.

There are no out-and-out strikers on the pitch for the visitors, with Matheus Cunha leading the line, supported by Pablo Sarabia and Pedro Neto.

Hwang Hee-chan and the fit-again Sasa Kalajdzic - who is back after a serious knee injury suffered on his Wolves debut last September - are both on the bench along with the re-signed Matt Doherty.

Fabio Silva is also only a substitute in a surprise move. It’s sensible and pragmatic from O’Neil perhaps, but it looks like a side hoping to cling on for a point rather than go out and try to win this game.

We’ll see how they fare, but goals were such a problem for Wolves last season, particularly on the road.

Rashford spearheads attacking Manchester United team

19:15 , George Flood

No surprises in that Manchester United team, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka getting the nod over Diogo Dalot at right-back.

Competitive debuts for new signings Andre Onana and Mason Mount as expected, with Marcus Rashford playing through the middle with Rasmus Hojlund out injured and Anthony Martial on the bench.

He’s supported by wingers Antony and Alejandro Garnacho plus new full-time captain Bruno Fernandes in an attacking lineup.

Ex-skipper Harry Maguire is on the bench amid talk of an imminent move to West Ham, as is fellow Hammers target Scott McTominay.

As well as Martial being fit enough for the bench, Dean Henderson is also a substitute having been expected to miss out tonight.

Gary O’Neil: Wolves can have a successful season

18:56 , George Flood

It’s been a tough summer for Wolves, make no mistake.

Key to the exit of Julen Lopetegui was an obvious disagreement over transfer policy, with the likes of Ruben Neves, Nathan Collins, Conor Coady, Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore all having departed.

Incomings have been extremely slow, with only Matt Doherty and goalkeeper Tom King brought in as free agents along with the permanent signings of Matheus Cunha and Boubacar Traore.

But new boss Gary O’Neil is nevertheless confident that he can achieve a successful season after penning a three-year contract at Molineux on Wednesday and having only a short time to work with his new players thus far.

"I have a real clear vision of what this group can be,” he said. “We started work on it on Thursday, we are four days in. I'm pleased with the progress but there is work to do obviously.

 (Action Images via Reuters)
(Action Images via Reuters)

"I've only been in the building a few days so as for setting goals for the season I haven't considered it.

"My goal at the minute is to work with the players really hard, improve their understanding, get them as ready as we can for Monday night and make sure we get them to a place where we can be competitive in every game.

"I am sure if we do that we will win enough football matches to have a successful season.

"What that is and what position that is it is too early for me to say. But I'm really positive around what we have and what we can achieve this year."

Ten Hag ‘really happy’ with Hojlund despite Kane move

18:27 , George Flood

Here’s what Erik ten Hag had to say at his pre-match press conference on Friday when asked about Manchester United getting Rasmus Hojlund instead of Harry Kane...

“We have chosen a striker and we are really happy with our choice,” he said.

“[Kane] is a great striker, a goal maker and apart from that he has all the conditions and abilities that you want to see in a striker. It’s a miss for the Premier League, absolutely.”

However, Ten Hag was not willing to get into comparisons over the two strikers, one an established global superstar and the other just beginning to forge his own big reputation in the game.

“I don’t think that I have to go into that discussion or give an opinion about that,” Ten Hag added.

“We are professional and the processes we do are really careful. We consider a lot of things but finally we make decisions, but not overnight.

“We study every decision and we are happy with the squad we have behind us now.”

Ten Hag ‘relaxed’ over Manchester United forward options

18:12 , George Flood

Presumably Manchester United will line up with Marcus Rashford through the middle tonight with no Rasmus Hojlund and Anthony Martial available not featuring at all during pre-season due to a hamstring injury.

Erik ten Hag insists he is relaxed about his forward options for the start of the season, even suggesting that Jadon Sancho could be deployed in a central attacking role if needed.

“I’m quite calm and composed in this situation because Rashy is very good as a striker,” he said. “We have seen it last Saturday.

“Anthony Martial is available as well. Jadon Sancho can play there as well, he did it in pre-season very well.

“The squad can deal with it as I already said this. There is a strategy behind it.”

Ten Hag: Manchester United won’t rush Hojlund recovery

18:03 , George Flood

Manchester United fans will be desperate for a quick look at their new £72m striker, on whom a lot of pressure already rests after such a significant transfer outlay despite his relative lack of experience.

Erik ten Hag said this week that he was happy with the deal for Rasmus Hojlund despite initial top target Harry Kane having finally left Tottenham, but will not rush the 20-year-old Danish international - who earned favourable early comparisons to a certain Erling Haaland after a breakout season in Serie A with Atalanta last term - into action as he recovers from a minor back problem picked up with his former team in pre-season.

“No, we are not in a rush,” Ten Hag said on Friday.

“We know we are also without him, we have a strong team and the position is covered. We don’t rush.

“It is about him being in the right level and then we have to integrate him in training and then we will bring him into the games.“We take our time. It is not about winning in this moment, it is about winning in the long-term.”

The Red Devils have put a lot of faith in a young, unproven striker but are otherwise packed full of star power under the guidance of a manager who has a year of English football experience under his belt, while they have not lost at home since September 2022.

Meanwhile, this looks set to be a season of struggle and toil for Wolves, who are not good travellers at all and have won on only one of their last 12 league trips to Old Trafford.

One slight positive for Wolves amid a general summer of worry and gloom is that they do appear to have a clean bill of health ahead of tonight’s opener.

New boss Gary O’Neil has said that Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha is fit to play after missing a couple of days of training in the build-up.

Matt Doherty is in line to make his second Wolves debut after re-joining the club in July, while the likes of Mario Lemina and Sasa Kalajdzic are also back fit.

Early Manchester United team news

Manchester United should hand competitive debuts to new signings Andre Onana and Mason Mount tonight.

However, headline summer arrival Rasmus Hojlund is not yet ready to play following a high-profile £72million move from Atalanta as he nurses a minor back issue.

Tyrell Malacia, Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo are also sidelined for United, along with goalkeepers Dean Henderson and Tom Heaton.

However, Erik ten Hag has said that Anthony Martial is fit to feature after not playing at all during pre-season due to a hamstring injury, though surely he won’t be in a position to start.

Welcome to Manchester United vs Wolves live coverage

17:27 , George Flood

Hello and welcome to the Evening Standard’s live coverage of Manchester United vs Wolves.

A busy first weekend of Premier League action in 2023/24 concludes with a Monday-night affair at Old Trafford, where United are unbeaten for almost a full year under Erik ten Hag.

They will be very confident of making a strong start to another top-flight campaign this evening against a Wolves side who endured a hugely difficult summer, struggling to make signings before seeing head coach Julen Lopetegui depart just three days before the action got underway.

Swift replacement Gary O’Neil did sterling work at Bournemouth last term and was incredibly unlucky to lose his job, but has a lot of work on his hands at Molineux if he is to avoid this team from becoming embroiled in a bitter relegation scrap this term.

Kick-off at the Theatre of Dreams is at 8pm BST, so stay tuned for all the match build-up, latest team news, lineups, pre-game thoughts from both bosses and minute-by-minute updates throughout the night.
