A Marine veteran was injured after a plane crash in North Carolina.

Kentucky resident Sean Yocum was a passenger inside a small plane when it crashed after takeoff on Sunday, May 26, in Cumberland County near Gray’s Creek Airport, according to ABC affiliate WCPO.

A family representative for Yocum told the outlet he was "critically injured" and sustained a broken back, broken arm, facial fractures and various other internal injuries, which will require multiple surgeries and possibly months of rehabilitation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the ones injured in this crash, their families and friends," Gray's Creek Fire Department Chief Ben Marsh wrote in a statement on Facebook. "Thank you to all the volunteers and first responders who assisted. We are proud of everyone who assisted with this call yesterday."

Following the crash, Yocum was transported by air to the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Hospital, according to Fox affiliate WXIX-TV.

A GoFundMe page has also been set up to cover his hospital expenses.

“Sean, one of the most giving and selfless people any of us know. A Marine, a friend to many, a father and a son, is going to need our help," read a message on the fundraiser.

"He will not be able to work for the better part of a year if not longer due to how they have to space his upcoming operations," the message continued. "Any help is greatly appreciated by Sean and his family."

As of publication on Thursday, May 30, over $11,000 has been raised.
