Marlee Matlin is the proud mom of four kids: Sarah, Brandon, Tyler and Isabelle.

The Oscar-winning actress met her husband, Kevin Grandalski, while filming the series Reasonable Doubts in the early 1990s. At the time, Kevin, a police officer from Burbank, Calif., was monitoring traffic near the film set when the two crossed paths.

“I became friends with a lot of cops, and one day I got to work and saw my friend in uniform and I went up and gave him a big hug and he stiffened up and I realized it was the wrong cop,” Marlee recalled to the Los Angeles Times. “Because of course they all look the same with their moustaches. And my friend sees this and goes, ‘Stay away from him.’ ‘No, no. You think I’m going to listen to you?’ And the rest is history.”

The couple married on Aug. 29, 1993, at the Los Angeles home of Marlee’s longtime friend Henry Winkler and began building their family of six less than three years later.

While promoting the Academy Award-winning film CODA in February 2022, Marlee gave insight to Extra about how she and Kevin embrace the differences of each of their children.

“I’m a mom of four and I know full well my kids as they’ve grown up that they’ve had their dreams,” she said. “It’s interesting to watch kids, what it is they want to choose, what path they wanted to go on, how they want to deal with everything in their lives, the choices that they make, so I get it and I chased my dreams.”

Here's everything to know about Marlee Matlin's kids: Sarah, Brandon, Tyler and Isabelle.

Marlee and Kevin welcomed their first child together, daughter Sarah Rose Grandalski, on Jan. 19, 1996. Ironically, Sarah’s birth date is the same day as an episode of the ‘90s TV series Picket Fences, which featured Marlee’s character, Laurie Bey, delivering a baby.

Growing up, Sarah was always a champion of her mother’s work as an actor and performer, even sometimes appearing on the red carpet with her. When Marlee competed on season 6 of Dancing with the Stars, then 12-year-old Sarah gave her mom inspirational pep talks behind the scenes to keep her focused and she attended every show alongside her dad.

"She worries and goes 'I might get eliminated,' and I'm like 'There's no way. You're good,' " Sarah told PEOPLE in 2008.

At the time, she aspired to have a career like her mom's. During Marlee's tenure on the competition reality TV series, the actress would find Sarah dancing around the house and called her “M-I-T,” which stood for “Marlee in Training.”

Since then, Sarah has found new career interests in the world of fashion and sales. She is currently living in L.A. and, according to LinkedIn, working part-time as a visual merchandiser at the designer boutique Dover Street Market Los Angeles.

Despite not pursuing a life in the spotlight, Sarah has continued to show support for her mom, even getting the same tattoo that the Quantico star has of the sign for “I love you” tattooed behind her ear.

"Because her mom is deaf, she wanted to identify with me,” Marlee told Allure.

In late April 2024, Sarah welcomed her first baby, a girl named Brooklyn Rose Garriola. Months prior, Marlee had announced that her eldest was expecting in an Instagram video where she rubbed Sarah’s belly and then signed “It’s a girl” in American Sign Language.

"There's no way to describe the feeling of becoming a grandparent for the first time," Marlee explained to PEOPLE. "The love for the child truly overwhelms you in the best way."

In the following weeks, Marlee expressed her appreciation for her growing family. “How lucky am I to call them my daughter AND granddaughter?” she posted on Instagram alongside a photo of Sarah holding Brooklyn Rose. “So blessed.”

Marlee and Kevin celebrated the arrival of their second child, son Brandon Joseph Grandalski, on Sept. 12, 2000.

Unlike his other siblings, Brandon has opted to be private on social media. He made his first and only red carpet appearance at age 8 when Marlee brought her entire family out when receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Brandon loves sports: While attending high school in La Cañada Flintridge, Calif., he played on the varsity soccer team for four years. He was also involved with school activities, becoming the associated student body commissioner his senior year.

Brandon first attended Emerson College in 2020 to play soccer and transferred the next year to Marquette University, where he majored in public relations and minored in advertising and communication studies.

When Brandon received his diploma from Marquette in 2023, it was extra special because Marlee gave the commencement speech for his graduating class. Upon hearing the news that his mom would be the keynote speaker, Brandon said he was "ecstatic."

"She’s the biggest inspiration in my life and hopefully, this will be a huge inspiration for everybody else," he explained to WTMJ-TV Milwaukee prior to the graduation ceremony.

He also told Marquette Today how much the speech would mean to him. “She has been the best. She is and always will be me and my siblings’ biggest supporter. Love the lady," Brandon shared. "It’s not every day that someone can say their mom will be the commencement speaker, so I am truly going to relish the moment.”

The feeling of love and admiration is mutual: During her commencement speech, which was delivered in American Sign Language and translated to English, Marlee gave a shout-out to her 2023 graduate.

“I am most proud to be honored here as a mom," she said. "I’m proud of my son Brandon who is graduating today.”

Brandon currently resides in Chicago and works on the game-day communications staff for the Chicago Blackhawks NHL team.

Marlee and Kevin expanded their family with the addition of their son Tyler Daniel Grandalski on July 18, 2002.

Tyler’s love of travel and spending time outdoors is evident on his Instagram profile, which is full of beach pictures, mountain snaps and sunset photos from his trips to San Diego, Boston and Berlin.

Despite his love of nature, Tyler also doesn’t mind a night of Hollywood glam. At the 2024 Oscars, he accompanied his mom in coordinating outfits, with Marlee wearing a sparkly lavender floor-length dress and Tyler matching in a silver and black tux and lavender bow tie.

It was an experience Tyler was grateful to have with his mother. “A night I'll always remember,” he wrote on Instagram alongside several photos of the two at the 96th Academy Awards. “@Themarleematlin thank you so much for letting me be your plus one! Until next year!!”

Currently, Tyler is living in Chicago and is a junior studying screenwriting at DePaul University after transferring from San Diego State University, according to LinkedIn. He is expected to graduate in 2025.

As he continues to work toward his degree, he's serving as the class vice president, a scholarship coordinator and an associate education co-committee head for his fraternity Delta Kappa Alpha at DePaul. In his position, Tyler organizes events, helps distribute scholarships to members and mentors fellow students, among other tasks.

Like his mom, Tyler is passionate about the arts and promoting inclusivity. While at DePaul, he has been enrolled in courses like “Inclusive Representation in Film and Television,” “Introduction to Pitching” and “Screenwriting for Television.” In 2024, he posted on LinkedIn about a short film project he had completed alongside other film students.

“I am so grateful for writing and completing another short film this past quarter. The Occurring, Constant, and Deranged Life of Charlie Deeds is a new story that exemplifies my past experiences with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder,” he explained in the post, later adding alongside a GoFundMe link, “Thank you so much for supporting this short and making it come to life.”

Tyler is also a member of the Delta Kappa Alpha Professional Cinema Society at his school, which focuses on building community among students of the cinematic arts. In addition, as a member of the International Thespian Society, Tyler works to advocate for theatre in education and society through workshops and community events.

In between all of his advocacy, leadership and school work, Tyler walks dogs as part of the network of pet sitters and dog walkers on Rover.com.

Marlee and Kevin completed their family with the birth of their daughter, Isabelle Jane Grandalski, on Dec. 26, 2003.

Like her siblings, Isabelle was involved in student life while attending La Cañada High School. Apart from her studies, she was a cheerleading captain, secretary of the Red Cross Club and a member of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, according to Outlook Valley Sun.

When she graduated from high school in 2022, Marlee shared a heartfelt Instagram post full of photos of Isabelle and the entire family and expressed her happiness for her daughter.

“She worked very hard all through four years...she showed perseverance, patience, used every ounce of courage and strength to plow through some hard times and got up to her feet every time she fell,” the actress wrote in part. “She’s the most loyal friend to many. Her sense of humor makes us laugh.”

Isabelle’s sense of humor is front and center on her TikTok page, where she has been making lighthearted content about her high school and college life with her friends since 2019. In many of her posts, she even recruits her dad Kevin to try out a few trends and TikTok challenges.

At the moment, Isabelle is a student at the University of Oregon and a member of the Beta Omega sorority. While visiting the school in October 2022, Marlee posted lots of pictures documenting her and Kevin’s trip to see their youngest.

“What a FUN weekend with our daughter @isabelle.grandalski!!! Parent/Family weekend at @uoregon with the Ducks beating UCLA football!” the Academy Award winner wrote in an Instagram carousel post. “Met with old friends and made few new ones too. Did go to a Frat party! Whoa! And yes, we did Isabelle’s laundry at the COOLEST laundromat in Eugene! So proud of our baby girl. Truly!”
