Married at First Sight Australia star Cameron Merchant has opened up about a rough patch in his life and how a stint in rehab helped him to get back on his feet.

While known as a reality TV star to fans across the world following his appearance in the 2019 series of the show, Australians might be more likely to know him for playing first class cricket for the Northern Districts in the late 2000s.

Speaking on the Not an Overnight Success podcast, Merchant talked about how he lacked direction in his life after his cricket career ended and a long-term relationship broke down, which resulted in a brief period of being homeless and checking into a rehab facility.

"I couldn't put pants on, and I was mentally and physically crippled," he said.

He found himself homeless at Vancouver airport for four days, before staying on the sofa of a friend.

Eventually checking into the Currumbin Clinic in Palm Beach, he recalls telling himself: "'You've got two choices here: either you're done, or you've got an opportunity to still be happy...'

"I remember sitting in a hospital bed, in mental rehab, and I remember thinking the only thing that was going to keep me going was that I hadn't been married yet, and I hadn't had kids," he shared. "It's something you've always strived for. Don't give up now."

The star shared that he credits Married at First Sight Australia, where he met Jules Robinson, with saving his life.

After 'marrying' on the show, they tied the knot in real life and recently welcomed a child, son Oliver, together.
