The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has addressed the potential link between her film's villain and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Last month The Marvel's trailer gave us our first look at former Doctor Who star Zawe Ashton as a new MCU villain Dar-Benn.

Dar-Benn is a high-ranking member of the Kree military empire and was originally depicted as male when he debuted in Silver Surfer comics in the 1990s.

In the trailer Dar-Benn is seen wielding a hammer, which many fans pointed out was similar to the one used by Ronan in Guardians of the Galaxy and the first Captain Marvel movie.

Speaking to Total Film, DaCosta was asked about the possible connection and assured fans that she knows exactly what she's doing.

"Here's what I will say about that, which in the comics is called the Universal Weapon," DaCosta teased.

"I would just say, for anyone watching this film, or having expectations, just know that I am deeply devoted to the comics. And so, there's always clues there."

The Marvels see Dar-Benn go against the powerful trio of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris).

The film will also see Samuel L Jackon return as Nick Fury, as well as Ms Marvel cast members Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff and Mohan Kapur.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige previously promised huge things from the film, even comparing it to The Avengers.

"There's something immensely powerful about seeing Monica and Kamala and Carol together in a frame," he said. "To me, it's only akin to the first Avengers movie and seeing the six of them together in a frame. It's chill-inducing. They're so great together, and they all have different histories with another."

The Marvels has a release date of November 10, 2023. Captain Marvel is streaming on Disney+ and available on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download.
