Marvel's Secret Invasion gets backlash over its use of AI

New Marvel series Secret Invasion has received backlash from fans over the show's decision to use AI in its title sequence.

The new show follows Samuel L Jackson's Nick Fury as he discovers that shape-shifting Skrulls have been infiltrating earth, rising to high positions of power by masking themselves as humans.

While initial reviews for the show have been positive, fans were quick to share their disappointment over the title sequence depicting the Skrull invasion of earth after learning it was created using AI.

"No way in hell Marvel used AI to create the secret invasion intro," one viewer wrote on Twitter. They even went as far as to add: "This is the worst intro for any TV show ever."

Another viewer added that while the use of AI made sense "on paper" it was saddening to see artists and animators miss out on a job opportunity.

"I think it's a shame marvel studios used ai art for the intro to secret invasion when there are so many talented artists that can perfectly capture the plastic inhuman feel of AI art already," a third person wrote.

Some on the social media site were supportive of the move though, with one person tweeting: "Wait people hate the ai generated intro of Secret Invasion? Huh… I found it the only time where ai was used in a cool way cause of how uncanny it was."

Explaining the decision to use AI in the opening titles, executive producer Ali Selim said he felt accurate given the nature of the show.

"When we reached out to the AI vendors, that was part of it — it just came right out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity, you know? Who did this? Who is this?" he told Polygon.

"We would talk to them about ideas and themes and words, and then the computer would go off and do something.

"And then we could change it a little bit by using words, and it would change," Selim added, admitting that he didn't "really understand" how the AI process worked.

Secret Invasion is available to watch on Disney+, with new episodes dropping weekly.
