CHIA HAN KEONG: So you are a professional footballer and you don't like the club which you are in. Maybe you don't like the manager. Maybe you don't like the players. Or you are the manager of a football club and you don't like this player who has been underperforming or has a bad attitude, and you want him out of the club. What can you all do? This is where the football transfer season comes in.

Some of us, we just write a resignation letter and then we give it to the boss and then we can leave. It's not as simple in the football world because most players are under multi-year contracts. And if you want to leave, you must break the contract, which means you need compensation. The club needs to be compensated.

So that's where player agents, the club, and the manager, and the player will negotiate. Sort of like a asking price for the player in order for him to leave the club. And that is where the bidding war comes in. Let's say if you are a very good player, such as Kylian Mbappe or Harry Kane, there might be a lot of clubs who want your services and they will bid over your valuation in order to get your club to agree to let you go to them.

After the club has accepted the bid, the player has to negotiate his new wages with his new club. And after all this negotiation has been done, the transfer can finally go through. This will happen in Europe throughout this two-month transfer season. Players move in, players go out. And everything has to end on the 1st of September. After that, no more transfers. Teams have to settle with what they have. And will go on until January, when the next transfer season happens.
