Doctor Who and House of the Dragon star Matt Smith has been announced for a brand new drama series at Sky. The new show will serve as an adaptation of Nick Cave's second novel The Death of Bunny Munro.

According to Deadline, Smith is set to star in a lead role as the titular character Bunny Munro who, following the death of his wife by suicide, finds himself the sole carer of the couple's young son.

Described as a "sex addict" and "self-professed lothario", the door-to-door beauty product salesman has loose ideas about what parenting involves.

With his nine-year-old son Bunny Junior in tow, Bunny Senior embarks on an epically out-of-control road trip across southern England as the father and son grapple with containing their grief.

Adapting the story from Cave's sophomore novel is BAFTA-winning writer Pete Jackson who previously penned Somewhere Boy.

Taking on Executive Producing duties is Cave himself alongside Smith and Jackson. Manpreet Dosanjh will serve as Executive Producer for Sky Studios while Ed Macdonald, Petra Fried and Emily Harrison Executive Produce for Clerkenwell Films.

"To work alongside Nick Cave feels like a great honor," Smith said. "It's a brilliant exploration of love, grief, and chaos. At its heart a deep, difficult, and tender story about a father and son, coping with loss and change."

Directed by Isabella Eklöf, who also serves as Executive Producer, the series is set to begin filming in England in Spring 2024 and will be made available on Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.

Meanwhile, Smith recently reunited with his Doctor Who co-star and former companion Jenna Coleman. The pair attended the BGC Partners' annual charity day in London where they were pictured together.

Smith starred as the Eleventh Doctor from 2010 to 2013 where he was joined by Coleman, who played his companion Clara Oswald, for his final season as the Time Lord.
