Matthew McConaughey Celebrates 12th Wedding Anniversary with Wife Camila by Sharing Sweet PDA Photo

The couple tied the knot in 2012 after six years of dating, and have since welcomed three kids

Matthew McConaughey and his wife Camila Alves McConaughey are celebrating 12 years of marriage with an intimate moment together.

On Sunday, June 9, Matthew, 54, marked the special occasion with a heartfelt Instagram post — which Camila later shared on her own Instagram page — that featured a photo of the actor kissing his wife on the forehead as he sported a cowboy hat and jean jacket.

"Thank you," he captioned the post simply, adding the hashtag "#happyanniversary."

Matthew and Camila, a model and entrepreneur, first met in 2006 at a club. In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, the actor revealed that it was love at first sight for him.

"Out of the corner of my eye, this sort of aqua-green figure went floating across the frame about 20 feet in front of me," the Oscar winner said at the time, recalling the moment he and Brazilian-born Camila met. "My eye went up and I remember what came out of my mouth. I didn’t say, 'Who is that?' I went, 'What is that?' "

"As l was trying to get that’s attention across the room, I went in my head, 'This is not the kind of woman you call over across the room, McConaughey. Get your ass out of your chair and go get her.' Which I did," he added.

The pair welcomed son Levi on July 7, 2008, and daughter Vida on Jan. 3, 2010, before they tied the knot on June 9, 2012, in a three-day-long ceremony held at their Austin, Texas, home. Camila previously told PEOPLE that although there were some VIP guests present at their nuptials, including Reese Witherspoon, Kenny Chesney and Woody Harrelson, their kids took on some of the most important roles that day as ring bearer and flower girl.

"[They] seem to understand what we are doing on a spiritual level," Camila told PEOPLE at the time.

"We decided to embrace the ritual of marriage as an opportunity and adventure we'll take together," Matthew added.

Since then, the longtime couple has embarked on professional adventures together — including launching their viral tequila brand Pantalones last year — and also welcomed a third child, 11-year-old son Livingston.

The Interstellar actor and his wife are often candid about their relationship and their love for each other. In another interview with PEOPLE in 2020, Matthew shared that before he met Camila, he wasn't sure he would ever find "the one" — and even considered that he was trying "too hard" to find her.

"I was like, 'Wait, just wait. Be yourself. She’ll come if she’s supposed to come. And if she doesn’t, that’s okay, you’re still a good man, McConaughey,' " he recalled at the time.

"Since [the evening we met], I have not wanted to spend time with any other woman, definitely have not wanted to sleep with anyone else. I’ve not wanted to have children with anyone else other than her," Matthew added of his wife. "We have a love that we never question."
