Max Holloway and Alessa Quizon married in 2022

Max Holloway has been married to his wife, Alessa Quizon, since 2022.

While it is unknown how the American mixed martial artist and the professional surfer met, they confirmed their relationship via Instagram in February 2020.

However, it was during the COVID-19 pandemic that she was able to fully explore her relationship with Holloway and spend time together, which they normally wouldn’t have been able to do with her touring schedule and his training and traveling.

In November 2022, Holloway popped the question during a beachside proposal. They waited until spring 2022 to wed in their home state of Hawaii. Quizon has since become a staple ringside along with her stepson, Rush, during her husband’s fights.

So who is Max Holloway’s wife? Here’s everything to know about Alessa Quizon and her relationship with the professional fighter.

She is a Hawaiian native

Quizon is a native of the island of Oahu in Hawaii, raised in the west side in Makawao, which is famous for being a surf town. Although she spends most of her time touring the world competing, traveling has made her realize just how important her hometown is.

“Getting to see different countries and it makes you appreciate home as well,” she told Outrigger Resorts. “There's just certain places [that are special]. I've been to a lot of countries and it was very different and then I come back home and Hawaii's paradise so I'm like, ‘Why am I taking this place for granted?’ ”

She also revealed that when she does get homesick she listens to a lot of Hawaiian reggae music.

One of the highlights of her surf career was competing in the Women’s Pro Semi-Finals in Honolua Bay.

“The waves were amazing, it took place in our homeland and most of my family were [sic] there to support me! I love that wave and that year we got to make Hawaii proud,” she told Free Surf Magazine.

She is a professional surfer

“When I was two I was thrown in the water, and I fell in love,” she recalled to Into The Gloss. “And then I started surfing at four — my dad taught me. Surfing’s been in my family for two or three generations now. There’s no other feeling in the world like riding a wave.”

Quizon would watch her older sister compete in surfing competitions and contests. Witnessing the sport and what her sister went through to obtain such high skill was what made Quizon realize that professional surfing was going to become her career.

“Ideally, I’m in the water almost every day,” she added. “Surfing uses your entire body and your mind — it’s definitely physical and mental. When I was on the world tour — that’s like the elite, best of the best — I was ranked seventeenth in the world. The oldest person I was surfing against was maybe 32 at the time, and the youngest was probably 17.”

Although Quizon does get to call the ocean “my office,” it took time to learn the ocean patterns.

"I don't just throw myself into a wave and let myself get pounded," she shared with Teen Vogue. "I'll study it, because it's all about preparation. Then, when I feel like I can handle the wave, I throw myself out there."

Max popped the question in 2020

On Nov. 17, 2020, the couple announced that they were engaged.

In an Instagram post, Holloway wrote, “She said yes,” alongside photos of the pair enjoying the beach with her new engagement ring on full display. “Truly blessed,” Quizon added.

In addition to the engagement announcement, on the same day, the UFC announced the iconic fight between Holloway and Calvin Kattar for UFC Fight Night. At the time, this marked Holloway’s first non-title fight in four years. Holloway won the fight with a unanimous decision and accounted for 60 percent of the strikes.

They wed in 2022

On April 16, 2022, the couple tied the knot at the Lanikuhonua Cultural Institute in Ko Olina, Hawaii. They had a beachside ceremony with their entire families in attendance, including Holloway’s son, Rush.

Quizon shared a series of photos from the ceremony and reception on her Instagram account the following day. “I married the love of my life,” she captioned the photos. “Sorry in advance, just wanted to let you guys know that I will be spamming your feed with all the beautiful memories that were made and the appreciation for those that made our wedding so special.”

Holloway celebrated their nuptials in his own Instagram post, writing, “I get to spend the rest of my life with my soulmate.”

She surfs with Max

Growing up in Hawaii, it’s no surprise that Holloway is a huge fan of surfing. Holloway shared on the JRE MMA Show that some of his professional surfing friends, including Makua Rothman, Zeke Lou and Kana Asing, have told him that fighting is “so crazy.”

“I tell them, guys, surfing is crazy, they’re like, no fighting is crazy! I’m fighting with a human being and I can kind of control what they do at certain times and what I do. When you’re surfing, you’re fighting Mother Nature, my guy! If you fall off and if Mother Nature wants to throw you three times you’re going to get thrown three times!”

She is a step-mother

Max and his first wife, Kaimana Pa'aluhi, welcomed their first and only child, Rush, in 2012. They separated in 2014 and divorced in 2017. Since then, Quizon and Rush have established a close relationship.

“There are so many ways to describe Rush. He’s adventurous, courageous, and excitingly curious,” she wrote on Instagram in honor of his 10th birthday. “He is funny, clumsy and extremely loving … It has been a blessing to be by your side and watching you grow.”

“At the time, I wish I was more appreciative,” Quizon told Surfers In Residence of how her parents raised her. “Now I understand what it’s like, I have my own son now and I’m like, this is tough, this is hard! I can’t believe my dad did all this with me and my siblings."

Her parents are her role models

In an interview with Outrigger Resorts, Quizon was asked who she looked up to. Without hesitation, she responded, “My family.” Growing up, her parents were the people she admired and looked up to and still are to this day.

“I give a lot [of respect] to my mom and dad,” she shared. “There are so many sacrifices that had to be done. At the time, I was so oblivious. But my dad, he had a nine-to-five job. He would actually wake up at 5 a.m., he was a truck driver, so 5 a.m. to get to his job at 7 a.m. to clock in and he’d be out driving all day. And then he would finish at 4 p.m. At the time, I lived really far from the beach.”

Her father, Scott, would then rush home to round up Quizon and her brothers to then drive them roughly 45 minutes to the beach to surf for an hour. He would drive them every single day to practice. Quizon admitted that at the time she didn’t realize just how much work that took.

“He really did a lot,” she concluded.

She helps Max in his career

Quizon and Rush frequently attend Max’s fights and are often found sitting ringside. In the ESPN+ series, UFC Journey, his episode opens with a scene of him and his family enjoying a day at the beach, the people who have supported him in his career.

“They open up the show with us, and they talked about my family — Rush and my wife, Alessa — and it’s good,” he told UFC.com. “It just seems like things are falling into place. We’re in a good place right now, especially in my personal life. It’s awesome.”

Aside from being his biggest cheerleader, Quizon also makes him a better person, which also improves him in mixed martial arts.

"My wife made my life easier,” he told The MMA Hour. “She took a lot of things off my plate and she just makes it easier. So, all I got to do is go there, focus, do my thing ... That woman! They are amazing. She is amazing. They are like almost superheroes you know ... She does a lot and I am just super grateful for her."
