New Max movies: the best films to stream in June

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Release date: June 1
RT score: 98% (critics); 86% (audience)

Widely regarded as the movie that introduced wuxia to western viewers, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is definitively one of the best martial arts films of all-time.

Based on the Chinese novel of the same name, it tells the tale of Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-fat), a 19th century warrior who entrusts his sword (called Green Destiny) to his lover Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh). However, when said blade is stolen, the duo embark on a perilous journey to the House of Yu to reclaim what is rightfully theirs.

A ground-breaking action-adventure flick that routinely finds a spot on guides concerning the 21st century’s best films, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is simply unmissable. In short: we couldn’t not spotlight in this month’s new Max movies update.

Minari

Release date: June 1
RT score: 98% (critics); 87% (audience)

Max continues to build out its impressive library of A24-developed films, and the addition of Minari means it’s now home to one of the most acclaimed flicks in the studio’s back catalog. Invincible star Steven Yeun features in this tender, sweeping story about a family of South Korean immigrants who move to Arkansas in the 1980s, which is a semi-autobiographical take on director Lee Isaac Chung’s own life and upbringing.

An intimate and heart-rending glimpse of cultural assimilation, Minari examines the full impact of the challenges associated with starting your life over and the strength of character (not to mention the love and support needed from your family) necessary to achieve your dreams. A powerfully poignant flick that deserves to be seen.

Uncut Gems

Release date: June 1
RT score: 91% (critics); 52% (audiences)

This sweaty-palmed thriller, which showed comedy star Adam Sandler had the acting chops to pull off a serious role, tells the frenetic tale of Howard Ratner (Sandler), a jeweller and gambler who plans a gem sale that'll solve all his problems. Instead, Howard makes more and more ill-advised bets, and the walls begin to close in.

Stressful but enthralling, Uncut Gems is an extremely captivating and anxiety-inducing flick led by a powerhouse performance from Sandler. It lends itself well to being a fascinating character study, too, as you watch Ratner begin to suffocate under the weight of his terrible decisions and inability to put anyone but himself first. Add it to your new Max movies watchlist ASAP.

Am I OK?

Release date: June 6
RT score: 79% (critics); TBC (audience)

After her last film – Spider-Man spin-off movie Madame Web (out now on Netflix) – was critically and commercially panned, Dakota Johnson will aim to deliver a much better film-based offering with this Max original.

Am I OK? sees Jonhson tackle the role of Lucy, a 30-something LA native who, after repeatedly failing at dating men, realizes she’s gay. Armed with the support of her lifelong best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), Lucy begins to navigate her newfound romantic freedom. That’s the case, anyway, until Jane suddenly tells Lucy that she’s permanently relocating to London.

As evidenced by its positive RT score, Am I OK? has been positively received by critics on the film festival circuit. Will it have enough to entertain general audiences, though, and rebuild Johnson’s reputation following Madame Web? Time will tell.

Problemista

Release date: June 28
RT score: 88% (critics); 84% (audience)

The third A24 movie to feature in June’s spotlight section, Problemista is a surreal and wildly creative flick from the mind of Julio Torres. Problemista’s main actor, writer, director, and co-producer plays Alejandro, an aspiring but struggling toy designer who relocated from El Salvador to New York to pursue his dream. Unfortunately, things aren’t going to plan for Alejandro, and he’s forced to start working for an erratic art-world outcast (played by Tilda Swinton) to ensure his work visa is renewed before its expiry date.

An absurd and occasionally bleak examination of the human experience, Problemista isn’t for everyone, but it’ll appeal to, and speak to the sensibilities of, artists across the globe and film fans looking for something uniquely peculiar to stream.
