Ruby and James' love story is not over yet.

On June 12, just over a month after Maxton Hall – The World Between Us debuted on Prime Video — and made history as the streamer's most successful international original series — the cast is back on set and production has officially begun on season 2.

The second season will be based on Save You, the second book in Mona Kasten's bestselling German trilogy, and will see all of the main stars return, including Damian Hardung, who plays James Beaufort and Harriet Herbig-Matten, who plays Ruby Bell.

In the first images from the set, Hardung, 25, and Herbig-Matten, 20, are back in their character's signature Maxton Hall uniforms — and the tension is palpable after the devastating events of the season 1 finale.

According to the official synopsis, season 2 will pick up following James and Ruby's "passionate night together in Oxford," as Ruby's "greatest life goal [is]within reach" and "everything seems to be going perfectly" in life following many ups-and-downs between her and James in season 1.

"But a stroke of fate in James' (Hardung) family changes everything and James himself, of all people, brings [Ruby] back from cloud nine to a harsh reality," it further notes.

The synopsis continues, "Ruby is devastated. She has never had such strong feelings for anyone as she does for James - and she has never been so hurt by anyone either. She wants her old life back, where no one at Maxton Hall knew her and she wasn't part of the elitist world of her classmates."

Despite how hurt she is, Ruby "can't forget James - especially since he's doing everything he can to win her back."

Hardung and Herbig-Matten are not the only cast members returning for season 2. Sonja Weißer (Lydia), Ben Felipe (Cyril), Fedja van Huêt (Mortimer), Runa Greiner (Ember), Justus Riesner (Alistair) and Andrea Guo (Lin) will also reprise their roles.

Guo teased fans with a post on her Instagram Stories ahead of the news of the season's start as she posted a video with Herbig-Matten where the actresses brushed their teeth while wearing matching Hawaiian t-shirts.

"Getting ready for season 2 ❤️‍🔥," she captioned the video, which Herbig-Matten reposted.

Season 1 saw Ruby go from an invisible scholarship student at the salacious prep school to the target of James' ire after she accidentally spotted his sister Lydia (Weißer) amid a scandalous romp. Despite setting out to keep her quiet, James and Ruby found themselves nurturing a spark they couldn't ignore — although they made multiple attempts to do so.

The series was renewed for a second season just 10 days after its premiere, with Amazon MGM Studios' VP of International Originals, James Farrell, calling it the latest "success from Europe that will inspire a global audience" in a press release.
