Three years after the alleged incident, Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The Canadian rapper, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, shot at the feet of then-partner Megan Thee Stallion (Megan Pete) as they drove home from a pool party on July 12 2020. The party, held in the Hollywood Hills, was hosted by reality star Kylie Jenner.

According to testimony given during the trial, Megan demanded to be allowed out of the car, after which Tory told her to "dance bitch" and fired at her feet with a handgun. Megan, who said she was bleeding profusely, fell and crawled to the driveway of a nearby property. Tory since told police that he was apologetic and offered to drive Megan home, later confessing that he had offered her money to stay silent about the incident.

Megan has faced a barrage of hate since the sentencing was announced. One comment left underneath her most recent Instagram post reads, "you gonna get canceled for ruining the career of a real artist." Another says, "you might think you got justice but you sure won’t have peace." The judge reported receiving over 70 letters from people supporting Tory, including one from rapper Iggy Azalea.

Tory was charged with assault with a semiautomatic firearm and carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle. Despite pleading not guilty, he was found guilty of three felonies: having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle; assault with a semiautomatic firearm; and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. Comments left on social media allege that Tory never shot at Megan. One comment reads, "he ain’t even shoot you meg." Another comment grants that while he may have shot her, that she "really got that man 10 years for a foot shot smh [shake my head]."

Initially, Megan claimed that her bleeding feet were due to stepping on cut and broken glass but later revealed on Instagram that it was, in fact, due to being shot by Tory. "I didn't tell the police nothing, because I didn't want us to get in no more trouble than we was [sic] about to get in," she captioned the now-deleted post.

Megan has said that the trial, a public and divisive cultural moment, has meant that she will "never be the same." As part of her victim impact statement and as reported in the US media, Megan's statement said: "Since I was viciously shot by the defendant, I have not experienced a single day of peace.

"Slowly but surely, I'm healing and coming back, but I will never be the same."

Tory's lawyers have said that "assuming the allegations are true," Tory's "psychological, physical and childhood trauma was a factor in the commission of the offense." One of Tory's lawyers, Jose Baez, has said that Tory plans to appeal the 10-year sentence due to "significant issues" during and with the trial.

"Violence against black women and girls is a long-standing national epidemic that has long been overlooked and under-reported," Tanishia Wright, the director of victim services at the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office told reporters after Tory had been sentenced.

"Women of colour more times than not do not come forward to report victimisation due to the fear they will not be believed."
