Meryl Streep Thanks The Team Behind ‘Barbie’ For Saving “The Movies Last Summer And All Of Our Jobs”
Meryl Streep praised the team behind Barbie as she took to the podium at the Palm Springs Film Awards last night, where she presented Carey Mulligan with the International Star Award, Actress, for Maestro.
She followed Billie Eilish and Finneas, who had just accepted an award for their song “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie soundtrack. They became the first songwriters to ever receive the Chairman’s Award at Palm Springs.

In a moment that brought back memories of Steven Spielberg’s remarks to Tom Cruise last year when he thanked him for saving the movie business with Top Gun: Maverick, Streep told the team they “have delivered the ‘Barbie’ love bomb, You saved the movies last summer and all of our jobs. You’ve delivered joy to countless generations and genders of people, and you should surf that wave, kids, until you’re old and deserve to be jaded like me.”
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was the highest grossing movie of 2023 with $1.4 billion in ticket sales, and is the highest-grossing Warner Bros. film in history.
