Michael Mosley – latest: TV doctor leaves Britain for the better, says friend in moving BBC tribute
The late television and radio doctor Michael Mosley leaves Britain for the better, after showing millions of people how to improve their health and wellbeing in easy ways, a friend and former colleague has said.
Scientist and broadcaster Dr Hannah Fry said in a special BBC documentary: “Dr Michael Mosley achieved what so many broadcasters dream of: he made a difference to people’s lives, changing the way we see ourselves, our health and our wellbeing.
“And in doing that for so many people, for so many years, he leaves Britain for the better.”
Dr Mosley , who died after disappearing on a walk on the Greek island of Symi, was aksi hailed as “one of the most important broadcasters of recent decades” in a special BBC Radio 4 programme.
It comes as his body is likely to be released to his family and repatriated by the weekend.
He was found to have died of natural causes on 5 June after setting off for a walk from Saint Nikolas beach at around 1.30pm that day in searing 40C heat without a mobile phone.

A BBC special has remembered TV doctor Michael Mosley, whose trailblazing style of self-experimentation in the name of science changed “the health habits of a nation”.
Michael Mosley: The Doctor Who Changed Britain reminded viewers of his numerous examples of self-experimentation.
He put a needle through his anaesthetised hand, and swallowed a camera to film his lunch digesting at the Science Museum.
He turned his body into a “living laboratory” in BBC Four documentary Infested: Living With Parasites.
In a clip from the programme which featured on the tribute show, Mosley said: “The time has come to give myself tapeworm. I’m feeling mildly apprehensive. Well, I think I’m confident that it should be safe.”
Dr Mosley also demonstrated the nutritious value of blood in 2015 documentary titled The Wonderful World Of Blood by making two black puddings out of his own blood.
“Millions of us will know Michael Mosley as a TV doctor who opened our eyes to a healthier way of life,” TV doctor Hannah Fry said.
“Michael was an endless source of inspiration, helping us live life that little bit better. Changing the health habits of a nation.”
‘A kind word in the ear'

Intermittent fasting reduced body fat

As Dr Mosley began to develop some of the conditions of middle age, he “interrogated his own health to help make us better”.
In a 2012 Horizon film called Eat Fast and Live Longer, he had his body fat analysed.
A man on a calorie-restricted diet had only 11 per cent body fat, whereas Dr Mosley had 27.1 per cent fat.
Although he was far from fat, his abdominal fat ratio was said to be a risk factor for cancer.
“After this unexpected news, Michael set out on a journey of discovery that would change not only his life, but the health habits of a nation,” said Dr Fry.
He embraced the idea of intermittent fasting. His body fat went down to 19 after this.
Tapeworm experiment

But it was his experiment swallowing h.pylori to demonstrate the bug that causes stomach ulcers that brought him wider fame.

The programme will focus on Mosley’s decades-long broadcasting career and how he transformed people’s lives through science.
Mosley first trained as a doctor before moving into the world of broadcasting, presenting a host of science programmes and films on the BBC including Trust Me, I’m A Doctor, which looked at healthcare in Britain.
In 2002, he was nominated for an Emmy for his executive producer role on BBC science documentary The Human Face, and he also ingested tapeworms for six weeks for a 2014 documentary called Infested! Living With Parasites on BBC Four.
Other tourists die or go missing in extreme heat in Greece

Elsewhere in Greece, a 67-year-old Dutch tourist was found dead in Crete on 5 June. The man collapsed while crossing the Mylon gorge in Rethymno. The fire service confirmed the death on social media and local media reported he suffered heart failure in the heat.
On the same day local media reported a 70-year-old French tourist collapsed and died while walking on a beach in Sitia, Crete.
A fourth tourist death was reported on Thursday 13 June, again on Crete. An 80-year-old man had left his hotel on his own and was found dead near an archaeological site near the northeast town of Malia.
Search teams in Greece are still looking for three other missing tourists in separate incidents.
Retired US police officer Eric Calibet disappeared while out on a solo hike on the island of Amorgos in the southeast of the country on Tuesday afternoon. Mr Calibet, 59, knew the area well having been visiting the island almost every year for about a decade.

The late TV star was reportedly excited as he told friends the BBC had invited him to be on the show for its 20th anniversary just weeks before his tragic death.
While it is thought the 67-year-old had not yet signed a contract for the show, a friend told the Mail: “He told me just the week before last he’d been invited to do Strictly.” The BBC declined to comment.

American tourist, 59, vanishes from Greek Island solo hike – days after Michael Mosley’s death

Rescue operations have been launched on the Greek island of Amorgos after a retired US police officer disappeared while out on a solo hike - days after the death of TV doctor Michael Mosley in similar circumstances.
Eric Albert Calibet, 59 – known to friends as Albert – had been vacationing on the island but was reported missing by a friend on Tuesday afternoon.
Calibet left for the challenging four-hour hike, from Aegiali to Katapola around 7am, according to local outlets. The friend reported the disappearance to Amorgos police after he had not returned eight hours later. Authorities have not been able to contact Calibet via either of his two cell phones.

A favourite holiday destination for much of Europe, Greece has now been hit by the earliest heatwave on record. A heatwave is classed as temperatures exceeding 38C for at least three days.

The body of Dt Michael Mosley is likely to be repatriated by the weekend, forensic pathologists have told the Guardian.
“Usually it’s only a matter of time once a postmortem is conducted for a body to be released,” said Dr Grigoris Leon, who heads the Hellenic society of forensic medicine. “That means in this case it’s a question of days before repatriation takes place.”
An initial inquest conducted by a coroner based on their inspection of the body and an autopsy found no injuries that suggested criminal action.

Later in the episode, Mosley shared with the audience one of the “scarier experiments” he had taken part in - a personality test.
“I was stuck in a brain scanner and showed images of someone being hit with a ruler and then they hit me with a ruler,” he explained.
When he asked for the results, the psychologist told him: “I’d send your wife out of the room at this point.”
Mosley admitted that “according to this test, I am a bit of a psychopath”.
As the audience laughed, Professor Paul Bloom reassured him: “If you’re worried you’re a psychopath, you’re not a psychopath.”

Just One Thing: There’s Only One Michael Mosley is due to be aired on BBC Radio 4 at 11am, and has been released on BBC Sounds, and features the TV doctor’s final interview at the Hay Festival.
In a tribute, Mr Van Tulleken said: “As you’re listening to Michael, I want you to reflect on his style - dryly witty, modest, humble. This style disguises that he is one of the most important broadcasters of recent decades.

A huge, shocked group of press and bystanders gathered on Sunday afternoon to watch the conclusion to a story which has gripped the world over the last few days.
The body of TV doctor Michael Mosley, 67, was spotted that morning from a boat by a British TV reporter after a search which had taken over the entire island of Symi, in Greece.
The former medical personality, author of the popular fasting diet known as the 5:2, had almost made it to safety before he died.
Emergency rescue teams, who were searching just 50m from where Dr Mosley was found, were clearly devastated as his body was carried away.
Volunteers and emergency workers tried to locate him from 7am until 3am for three days in a row - but had missed his body by metres.
Jannis and Sophia Volas, who have been married for 37 years and have two sons, were the chief volunteers leading the search operation.
The couple’s endless search took place through unrelenting heat over jagged rocks, where poisonous snakes were hiding.
The pair paused only to make enough money to support their family – Ms Volas working in a Symi bakery, and Mr Volas a plasterer and blacksmith – but their tanned faces and evident exhaustion showed just how hard they had searched.

Tourists unaware of risks of heatwave, rescuers say

As Greece faces unusually high temperatures, concerns are rising about the lack of awareness among tourists regarding the risks of trekking in the extreme heat.
Following the death of TV presenter Michael Mosley on Symi, two other tourists are reported missing on Samos and Amorgos.
In recent days, emergency services have also been deployed to these remote islands to search for an elderly Dutch man and a US national who went missing while hiking.
Dimitris Katatzis, who heads the Samos rescue team, said that missions were often made more difficult because tourists, frequently unaware of the risks, “veered off track” to see sites and then got lost, the Guardian reported.
“Yesterday we saw a couple [of foreigners] walking a trail in 41C without hats,” he told local media. “It defies logic.”
With record-high temperatures already being recorded, local officials are calling for improved safety measures and better information for visitors to prevent further tragedies.

CCTV footage has revealed one of the last sightings of Dr Michael Mosley just two hours before his tragic death on a Greek island hillside.
Greek police earlier this week released CCTV of what appears to be the TV star walking in the searing heat at 2pm on the day he died.
The footage shows the health guru holding a purple umbrella as he walks to a path that leads towards Agia Marina 1.5 miles away, which is where initial autopsy findings state he likely died at around 4pm. In the video, he appears to pass a house that has a tarpaulin-covered speedboat in the driveway.

The medical and scientific community have reacted with “complete grief” to the death of Michael Mosley after he died while on holiday in Greece.
The broadcaster and columnist, who was reported missing on Wednesday before his body was found on Sunday, advocated intermittent fasting through the 5:2 diet and The Fast 800 diet and presented science and medical documentaries on the BBC and Channel 4.
Dr Mosley based his book The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet on research by Roy Taylor, who is a professor of medicine and metabolism at Newcastle University and the academic contributed to the work.
Asked how the research community has reacted, Professor Taylor said: “I think with complete grief, because Michael was such a personable man, he was so likeable.”

Michael Mosley had been invited to take part in Strictly Come Dancing, a friend has said, after championing the health benefits of dancing.
The late TV star was reportedly excited as he told friends the BBC had invited him to be on the show for its 20th anniversary just weeks before his tragic death.
While it is thought the 67-year-old had not yet signed a contract for the show, a friend told the Mail: “He told me just the week before last he’d been invited to do Strictly.” The BBC declined to comment.

Two BBC programmes remembering Dr Mosley air tomorrow

Two BBC programmes remembering TV presenter and columnist Michael Mosley are airing tomorrow.
On Friday at 8pm, Michael Mosley – The Doctor Who Changed Britain will take a look at his almost four decades of broadcasting on BBC One.
It will cover how he transformed people’s lives, fronted the BBC show Trust Me I’m A Doctor and Radio 4’s podcast Just One Thing, and worked behind the scenes as a producer.
The BBC said: “His programmes have made a lasting impact on the nation’s health habits from intermittent fasting to the benefits of a cold shower.
“Michael also shared his own struggles with audiences worldwide; as a chronic insomniac he made programmes about sleep and, ever curious, he would also go to extremes in the pursuit of science, even infecting himself with a tapeworm. Celebrating Michael’s career, this programme marks the enormous impact he made, touching the lives of so many.”
Another programme, There’s Only One Michael Mosley will air on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds from Friday at 11am, and will contain the last interview the TV doctor gave.

Downing Street said Michael Mosley was an “extraordinary broadcaster” who had a “huge impact” on people’s lives.
The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “The reports from the weekend are heartbreaking and our thoughts are with Dr Michael Mosley’s family, his wife Clare and friends, in what must be deeply sad times.
“We have seen some incredibly touching tributes which have made clear the huge impact that Dr Mosley had on people and helped to transform people’s lives for the better.
“He will be known as an extraordinary broadcaster who used his platform to influence and change the way we think about many public health issues.”
