Michael Peña admits fear of taking on fan-favourite Jack Ryan role in season 4
Jack Ryan season 4 spoilers follow.
Marvel star Michael Peña has opened up about his "nerve-racking" role in Jack Ryan season 4.
Peña is joining the Prime Video series as Domingo 'Ding' Chavez — a CIA agent who recurs in both the Jack Ryan novels and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six universe.
While Peña has some experience playing franchise characters — he played Scott Lang's pal Luis in the Ant-Man movies and DEA agent Kiki Camarena in Netflix's Narcos: Mexico — he admitted to Digital Spy that he had trepidations about playing Ding.
"I mean, you watch the show, and it's a great show. And John is fantastic in it," he said. "And I've binged it in two days, the first season, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. So to be honest with you, you just kind of don't want to mess it up."
The actor went on: "You don't want to mess up something that's like a successful train. So you study up as best as you can, and then you have to let it go. But sometimes that letting go can be a little bit difficult.
"But you know, that took about a couple of weeks. And then I was, you know, I felt like I was like, kind of in the rhythm of the show. And from what I've seen, it's it, you know, it's good, I think people are gonna like it."
A spin-off for Ding, and possibly all of Rainbow Six, was previously announced but there has been no movement yet on making the project a reality.
The new season of Jack Ryan also brings back Abbie Cornish, from the first season, as Cathy Mueller — and she has recently discussed what it was like returning to the fold after a few years away.
Jack Ryan seasons 1-4 are streaming now on Prime Video.
