A Michigan mother and her son have been released from the hospital after a devastating car crash killed two other members of their family and resulted in serious injuries to the third.

On Wednesday, July 10, Chelsea and Levi Savage were discharged 10 days after they were injured in the crash that resulted in the deaths of Dan and Mason Savage, according to a GoFundMe established for the family.

Dan, 38, was driving with his family — wife Chelsea and their three sons Mason, Parker and Levi — when the incident occurred in Fillmore Township on the afternoon of June 30, NBC affiliate WOOD-TV reported.

Dan died at the scene while Chelsea and her three boys were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Mason, 14, and Parker, 10, suffered head injuries while Levi, 9, and Chelsea had less severe injuries.

Mason, whose initial prognosis was described as "poor," had irreversible brain damage and was placed on life support.

On July 6, Chelsea made the decision to donate Mason’s organs, which saved at least four lives, according to GoFundMe organizer Joe Josten.

Parker, whose 11th birthday is Monday, July 15, remains in the ICU “but continues to show small signs of improvement each day,” Josten wrote in a July 10 update.

The family was en route to ride dune buggies when the incident occurred at the intersection of 136th Avenue and 58th Street, about 30 miles southwest of Grand Rapids in Allegan County, CBS affiliate WWMT-TV reported at the time.

According to the outlet, a preliminary investigation by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office showed that Dan, who was driving west, failed to stop at a stop sign. The family’s sedan was hit by a pickup truck, whose driver was not injured in the collision.

Tina Josten, the boys’ great aunt, told WOOD-TV that the family was “shocked” to hear that Dan failed to stop since he worked as a driving instructor.

“He’s the person who does road tests for people to get their driver’s license, so he’s a very good driver, very cautious,” she said.

Tina Josten added that Dan "loved [his family] so much.”

As of Thursday, July 11, the GoFundMe for the Savage family has raised nearly $50,000. PEOPLE contacted the fundraiser's organizer, Joe Josten, for comment.
