Like any good godmother, Dolly Parton "isn't afraid to have the tough conversations" with her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus. In a new episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, Cyrus revealed that she was hesitant about attending the 2024 Grammys until Parton advised her to go. And thank goodness she did, because Cyrus took home two awards that night (her first ever Grammys) for her hit song "Flowers."

"I told her, 'I'm wondering if I'm going to do the Grammys or not,'" Cyrus recalled to Letterman, adding that the matter wasn't even a question for Parton. "And she said, 'Well, of course you're gonna do the Grammys. And you're not just gonna show up but you're gonna show off. And you're gonna be everything that you are sitting right here in front of me.' And she said, 'And don't forget about the beauty—the hair, the makeup, the whole show. You know, it's armor for us.'"

Cyrus did not disappoint on that front either. The star shutdown the red carpet in a gold chainmail Maison Margiela dress and voluminous Barbarella-inspired curls. The singer also took to the stage to perform her viral song and changed into another spotlight-stealing vintage beaded Bob Mackie dress with a midsection cutout and fringed skirt.

Cyrus added that Parton's advice wasn't about following cowboy boot-clad footsteps, but rather for Cyrus to stay true to herself on music's biggest night.

"She wasn't telling me to be Dolly," she told Letterman. "She wasn't telling me to be fabulous, hide behind the sparkles and the hair. She was telling me to be me."
