Miranda and James Derrick are a married couple at the center of Netflix’s “Dancing for the Devil” documentary

Miranda and James Derrick’s relationship has come under the spotlight with the release of Netflix’s Dancing for the Devil.

The dancers first met in April 2019, and their relationship quickly escalated as they spent time together during the COVID-19 pandemic. In August 2021, the two were engaged, and by April 2024, they were married.

However, their relationship led to an estrangement with Miranda’s, née Miranda Wilking, family. Miranda and James are signed to 7M Films, a management company run by Robert Shinn, who is also the leader of Shekinah Church. Miranda’s family alleged in Dancing for the Devil that 7M is a "cult," intentionally distancing its members from their families.

In May 2024, Miranda denied her parents’ sentiments in a statement to The Cut, telling the outlet, "I am not held against my will and I've never been a hostage. I go to church and I have faith in God. If one day I wish to pursue my faith elsewhere, I will and feel completely free to do that.”

She added, “As far as my career, my time at 7M Films has been one of the most exciting years ever and if one day I wish to partner with a different management company or start my own company, I will. No one is forcing me to do anything."

From how they met to where they are today, here’s everything to know about Miranda and James Derrick’s relationship.

They met on Instagram

Miranda and Melanie, who used to make dance videos on their TikTok, Wilking Sisters, together, met James at the same time when he messaged the two to work on a collaboration. After they danced together, James formed a group chat between the three of them, which Melanie said she was eventually removed from.

“We were in a group chat, us three, and then I got removed and it was just them two talking to each other," Melanie said in the Netflix documentary. "And I was like, ‘Miranda, he likes you.’ And then they started to date.”

Miranda soon started posting on her Instagram with James. In a March 2022 Q&A video on her Instagram, Miranda revealed that James said “I love you” first.

“It was me. I stopped being nervous and I was like, you know what, I’m risking it all,” James said.

Miranda and James grew closer during the COVID-19 pandemic 

Throughout 2020, Miranda and James’ relationship began to grow, and James developed a close bond with the Wilking family. That same year, the two joined the 7M Films company, and Miranda’s mom, Kelly, said she started to grow concerned over how much time the couple were spending with the members of the brand, as well as the Shekinah Church.

In the documentary, Kelly said she liked James “a lot,” but when she pointed out that the pair were dining at the pastor’s house very often, he told her there was nothing to worry about.

"I go, ‘What’s up with all these dinners?’ and he’s like, ‘Oh nothing, they’re just really nice people,’ " she shared in the documentary. "And I go, ‘Just be careful, because I don’t feel that’s the case. I think they want something from you.’ ”

They got engaged in August 2021

In 2021, Miranda and James cut ties with Miranda’s family, the Wilkings said in an Instagram Live video from February 2022. Before the Wilkings revealed their family rift, James proposed to Miranda in August 2021 while they were filming a dance video.

In a video posted to Miranda’s Instagram, she showed the two doing a choreographed dance to Michael Bublé’s “Fly Me to the Moon” when she turned around and saw James down on one knee, proposing.

“WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! 💍 You thought it was going to be just a dance video? So did I!” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram video. "Best surprise ever 😍🥺♥️I love you so much @bdash_2 😭.”

Miranda alleged that her parents believed James had kidnapped her

After the Wilkings spoke on Instagram Live, alleging that Miranda and James were part of a cult, the couple each individually denied the accusations and explained why they began to communicate less with the family.

Miranda explained the situation in a since-deleted video on TikTok, stating that she cut off her family not because her alleged "cult" told her to, but because her family didn’t approve of her moving out of her apartment with Melanie to move in with James.

"When I left, [my parents] decided to call the cops on James. Saying that my black boyfriend James kidnapped and abused me,” she wrote in the statement. She added that when the police arrived, they “laughed about the situation,” because she was seemingly fine.

In his statement, James wrote that Miranda’s father, Dean, called the cops on him and accused him of domestic violence and kidnapping.

“It started with a white beautiful woman moving in with a poor Black man from Compton that the parents did not approve of,” he wrote. “I get it! I was renting a room and had no car. I was a divorced man with a son.”

They got married sometime before April 2024

In April 2024, Miranda posted photos of herself in a wedding dress and James in a tuxedo that appeared to be from their wedding. However, it is unclear when the two tied the knot.

“I found you & it’s a good thing✨💍,” she wrote below the images.

Some fans believed that the couple got married in September 2021 after Miranda posted a video of herself dancing in a white dress with James, who was in a suit, in Las Vegas. In the caption, she wrote, “What happens in Vegas…🤍✨.”

Miranda and James continue to make content together

Though Melanie said the family has some contact with Miranda now — and Miranda did attend Melanie’s May 2024 wedding — the dancer is still under 7M management and continues to post dancing videos with James.

In January 2024, they moved into a new home together, where they often film videos with their dog, Carver. A few months later, Miranda posted a video of her and James celebrating Melanie’s birthday together at a vineyard.
