Mob of teens hurl traffic cones, bottles at Jewish man on Brooklyn street: NYPD
NEW YORK — A mob of teens threw traffic cones and bottles at a Jewish man on a Brooklyn street, police said Wednesday.
The 41-year-old victim, dressed in Orthodox Jewish garb, was walking near the corner of Lorimer and Meserole Sts. in Williamsburg around 11:45 p.m. on June 6 when the kids began to shout antisemitic statements at him as he passed, cops said.
The teens pelted the stranger with traffic cones and bottles before taking off.
The victim suffered minor injuries in the attack and did not require medical attention.
The NYPD’S Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the attack.
Cops on Wednesday released images of the teens in the hopes someone may recognize them. The city has seen an uptick in antisemitic incidents since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel, which sparked the war in Gaza.
As of May 21, antisemitic crimes were up 55% compared with the same time frame last year, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. Overall, hate crimes were up 31%.
There had been 143 anti-Jewish crimes — 51 more than during the same period last year — Kenny said.
Last month, 58-year-old driver Asghar Ali was charged with attempted murder and attempted assault as a hate crime after he verbally assaulted a group of Jewish people outside a Brooklyn yeshiva and then attempted to run them over.
No one was injured in the crazed May 29 attack outside Mesivta Nachlas Yakov School on Glenwood Road in East Flatbush.
