The two companies are currently meeting with writers to turn the collection of over 200 pocket-sized, collectible monsters, drawn from global myths and legend, into a series.

The brand was launched in 1989 by former Mattel execs Joe Morrison and John Weems, and have sold over 500M units globally. It has been turned into an ABC animated TV special, comic books and a Nintendo game.

Terence Carter and David Boorstein will executive produce the project on behalf of Westbrook Studios, alongside Barbara Goldner and Josh Feldman for Altar Rock Pictures, and Joe Morrison and Maggie Morrison for Morrison Entertainment Group (MEG).

Westbrook Studios is behind television projects including Peacock’s Bel-Air, Netflix scripted-documentary hybrid series Queen Cleopatra and Cobra Kai and Disney+’s Welcome to Earth.

Altar Rock Pictures was founded by Brian Goldner, the late Hasbro CEO and Chairman, who exec produced the Transformers franchise. It is repped by UTA.

David Boorstein, SVP, Head of Scripted TV at Westbrook, said, “We’ve seen a real thirst for projects rooted in nostalgia. Monster In My Pocket had such a major impact on our culture, and we’re excited to dive into the rich, captivating legends of these beloved characters, bringing new life to such an iconic brand alongside our partners at Altar Rock Pictures and MEG.”

Altar Rock Pictures Josh Feldman added, “Monster In My Pocket was my childhood obsession. It’s truly one of the last great independent toy brands. The Goldners and I are eternally grateful to Joe and the MEG team for entrusting us to shepherd one of their best brands.”

“Monster In My Pocket has been a part of my life for decades. I’m thrilled to now partner with Westbrook and Altar Rock as we reimagine the brand for a whole new generation,” said MEG’s Joe Morrison.
