What is a ‘moonfluencer’? A growing number of TikTokers are claiming the moon helps with manifestation

What is a ‘moonfluencer’? A growing number of TikTokers are claiming the moon helps with manifestation

Psychics and astrologers have been popular for centuries, but thanks to TikTok, “moonfluencer” accounts are on the rise, too — and they’re inspiring Gen Z to manifest and be positive in a whole new way.

A moonfluencer isn’t exactly a technical term, but it loosely refers to anyone who practices moonology, or the study of the moon’s lunar cycles and how they interact with the 12 Zodiac signs, and posts about it on social media. It’s considered an offshoot of astrology, and while it’s been around for centuries, it’s just now starting to go mainstream via social media.

Most moonfluencers post daily for their legions of followers to discuss how the current moon phase might be impacting their lives that day. Some don’t even need to speak on camera at all to attract thousands of viewers; they simply pull from an oracle deck — also known as “moon cards” — and hold them up to be viewed.

In these cases, cards can warn about tough times ahead, predict positive changes or encourage a need for patience. In some ways, they can be similar to tarot card readings, except that moon readings aren’t personalized for each viewer.

In other TikToks, moonfluencers share small rituals they practice at the start of each new moon. This can include things like lighting a special candle, burning sage and setting an intention for the weeks ahead. For some people, they can even be a form of self-care since they take place in private settings and often involve some form of quiet meditation.

The rituals don’t have to be elaborate and can look different from person to person. As some moonfluencers have shared, they use the time to journal or create a vision board for the future.

The main goal is to harness the power of the moon and manifest positive thoughts, feelings or energy — however that may be achieved.

Other moonfluencers dive deeper when talking about their beliefs regarding the impact of the moon phases.

“The moon isn’t just some celestial thing in the sky, it’s actually something that impacts our lives and our emotions,” astrologer Lexie Wilson (@thelexiewilson) claims in one recent TikTok. “Inside of your birth chart, the moon is what reflects your emotions. So, depending on where it is in the sky — depending on what sign it’s in in the sky — it can kind of impact how you’re going to feel for the rest of the day.”

In addition to helping you navigate your feelings, Wilson says that being “in tune” with the moon and where it is in its cycle can also help you adjust your expectations, make changes in your life and explore new career opportunities if they come your way.

It’s a subculture of TikTok that’s easy to get lost in — especially with so many videos popping up by the hour. And judging by the growing number of TikToks exploring this topic, it doesn’t appear to be going away any time soon.

Some moonfluencers even post confessional-style TikToks to their followers.

“The full moon in Aries has me f***** up,” @anastasiamoongirl shared in one recent video, “because I feel like all day yesterday I was picking myself apart. Angry, agitated. I love a full moon, but this Aries energy … “

In response, followers flooded the comments section by venting about how the full moon was manifesting itself for them.

“Yes same I’ve been *spicy* these last few days,” wrote @kolbsthekarmicwitchxo.

“i’m an aries sun and moon so i’m feeling right at home,” countered @dejiaprovost38.

The TikTok moonfluencer @sanaxgoddess often talks about the importance of “cleansing” yourself by releasing any pent-up negative energy at the start of each new moon.

Lunar worship began in ancient civilizations and later became a central part of Pagan and Wiccan beliefs. But now that it’s having a major renaissance on TikTok, it’s reaching millions of people all over the world and has reportedly attracted the attention of some celebs, like Kate Moss.

It’s probably no surprise then that the rise of moon worship has also coincided with Gen Z’s growing interest with crystals and tarot cards. In 2019, the sociologist Christel J. Manning called Gen Z “the least religious generation.” But when it comes to spirituality and all things mystical, Gen Z appears to maintain an open mind.
