“Vertigo” star Kim Novak attended the Cannes Film Festival in 1956 wearing a halter neck gown featuring a sheer bodice.
1964
In 1964, Sophia Loren appeared at Cannes in a plunging black dress with sheer panels. The actress accessorized with an extravagant suite of sapphire and diamond jewels.
2002
Cameron Diaz sported a sheer one-shoulder Versace gown at Cannes Film Festival in 2002. Featuring a thigh-high slit, her sparkly frock was adorned with a sequined checker pattern. Diamond bangles and open-toe heels completed Diaz’s ensemble.

At the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Elle Fanning updated Dior’s “New Look” in a custom ensemble modeled after the French label’s pioneering silhouette. The actress wore a sheer blouse with bow detailing and a flared tulle navy skirt. Fanning’s accessories included a black wide-brim chapeau and criss-cross pumps.

Bella Hadid reached into Jean Paul Gaultier’s archives for the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, selecting a black-and-white gown from the fashion house’s spring 2002 couture line.
