Morning Sun in Wisconsin Covered in Canadian Wildfire Smoke

The sun rose on a hazy scene in Madison, Wisconsin, on Thursday morning, May 18, as smoke from wildfires in Canada drifted southward over the United States, footage shows.

Rooftop cameras caught this footage at the NOAA’s Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus Thursday.

“Look near the Capitol for the tiny orb that only becomes visible well above the horizon,” the lab wrote on Twitter, adding it was “a gray morning” for Wisconsin, but “without a cloud in the sky.”

Conditions were hazy in Madison “all day” Wednesday, and turned eerie in the evening, UW-Madison CIMSS said. Credit: UW-Madison CIMSS via Storyful
