This Morning agony aunt Deidre Somers has shared the sad news that her husband of 55 years, Rick, has died.

Appearing on This Morning today (January 3) via video link, Deidre was there to speak about getting an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

Speaking of her MBE, Deidre said that she got a call letting her know about the honour a week before Rick died, meaning that she could share the happy news with him.

"A special thing for me was, you know, a lot of you know my husband died just before Christmas on December the 16th, but this call came through about a week before he died," she said, becoming emotional.

"So that was really special for me, I went and got the email and I could share it with him and say what had happened," she added.

During the emotional interview, Deidre said that even though her husband had days left to live, he still found ways to tease her.

"I was with Rick for 55 years, so it was really great and he was always a great tease so he had to get in a few digs first," she quipped.

"But he did the next day tell my daughter and tell me just how proud he was, so that made it extra extra special."

Revealing the unusual way she got the news, Deidre said that instead of an email confirmation, she actually received a call on the phone.

"I actually happened to get a phone call from the Cabinet Office, normally I think you just get an email straight away, but I think they'd got in a muddle with my email address so somebody actually phoned."

Deidre's husband was diagnosed with COPD and Parkinson’s 10 years ago. She is best known for her work as an agony aunt for ITV's This Morning and The Sun.

This Morning airs on weekdays from 10am on ITV1.
