Mother And Daughter Arrested Following Incestuous Marriage

A mother and daughter who married each other in March have been arrested for incest.

Mother Patricia Spann had previously been married to her son in 2008, but the union was annulled two years later.

She had lost custody of her three children some years ago, and the daughter and two sons were raised by their grandparents.

Proof of the union between Patricia, 43, and Misty Spann, 23, from Duncan, Oklahoma, was discovered in August during a child welfare investigation.

State law holds that a marriage between close relatives is considered incestuous whether or not there is a sexual relationship.

Court records prove that Patricia, 43, is Misty’s biological mother.

Arrest warrants were issued in Stephens County District Court charging both women with a count of incest. They each face up to 10 years in prison if found guilty.

An investigator for the Department of Human Services said that Patricia didn’t consider herself guilty of law-breaking as her name had been removed from her daughter’s birth certificate.
