Mother Charged After Her 4-Year-Old Daughter Dies from Heroin Overdose

Sanaa Riggins was found unresponsive in her father's bed after being exposed to heroin, police said

A St. Louis mother has been charged with the death of her four-year-old daughter.

On Saturday just after 6:20 p.m. local time, St. Louis County police found four-year-old Sanaa Riggins unresponsive at her father’s home, Fox 2 Now reported. She was rushed to St. Louis Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead just before 7:30 p.m.

Police said that their preliminary investigation revealed that Riggins had died of a drug overdose as she was exposed to heroin, which was found near the bed where she was, according to local news outlet KSDK.

Riggins’ mother, Christina Huntspon, admitted to police to using heroin in the home earlier on Saturday and said that her severe drug addiction was the likely cause of her daughter’s death, as no one else would have brought drugs inside, the outlet reported.

Riggins had been living with her father, who had legal custody of her, due to Huntspon’s drug addiction. The child's father did not show signs of drug use, per Fox 2 Now.

Investigators also noted to the outlet that Riggins was born under the influence of controlled substances.

Huntspon, 32, was charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death and is currently being held on a $500,000 bond, per Fox 2 Now.
