MTA train derailment in Coney Island suspends F subway service in part of Brooklyn

NEW YORK — Subway service was partially suspended in Coney Island on Wednesday when an F train derailed near the West Eighth Street-N.Y. Aquarium station in Brooklyn.

Police responded just before 12:30 p.m. to reports that a northbound F train had jumped the tracks north of the station.

F train service was suspended in both directions between Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue and the Kings Highway stations as crews responded to the scene.

Video shared with the New York Daily News from a nearby train showed firefighters and transit workers walking north along the elevated tracks toward the line of stalled train cars. The train appeared to be stopped above Neptune Avenue.

An FDNY spokeswoman said there were no initial reports of injuries, but firefighters were in the process of evacuating the train Wednesday afternoon and EMS was on standby.

Seventeen people had been evacuated from the south side of the train by 1:37 p.m., the Fire Department said. First responders at that time were awaiting a rescue train so they could evacuate the final 20 passengers.

From the ground, the fourth car from the front of the Queens-bound train appeared visibly askew.

Photos from the scene, shared with the Daily News, showed at least one of the fourth car’s trucks — a unit that contains motors, brakes and wheels — nearly a foot off the rails.

It was not immediately apparent what caused the derailment. MTA officials declined to provide details Wednesday afternoon, citing an “active investigation” into the incident.

Wednesday’s incident was the second reported subway passenger train derailment since a No. 1 train derailed in Manhattan’s Upper West Side on Thursday.
